He may be a butt-kicking superhero as Wolverine in the X-Men movies, but Hugh Jackman is truly a Broadway star at heart. The Golden Globe and Tony Award-winning actor is set to host this year’s The 68th Annual Tony Awards live from Radio City Music Hall in June. The gig is more than fitting: after all, this is the man who belted out classic musical hits, starring as Jean Valjean in 2012’s Les Miserables, which earned him an Oscar nomination.
“We are thrilled to have Hugh Jackman return to host the Tony Awards,” said Jack Sussman, the Executive Vice President of Specials, Music and Live Events at CBS Entertainment. “Hugh is the ultimate performer – actor, singer and dancer – he does it all, second to none. He is a consummate entertainer and the one you want out there hosting your live television event.”
Hugh couldn’t contain his own excitement, breaking the news on Twitter Tuesday morning:
“Couldn’t wait another minute… @TheTonyAwards @cbs_ #4thTime #Broadway #TheTonyAwards http://TonyAwards.com http://instagram.com/p/kSW3EjChLQ/”
This marks the fourth time Hugh is hosting New York theatre’s big night; he previously hosted the show three consecutive years from 2003-2005. He is going neck-in-neck with another Tony favorite, How I Met Your Mother‘s Neil Patrick Harris, who has also hosted the show four times, including last year’s ceremony.
NPH also tweeted the news on his Twitter account:
“I’m so proud of @RealHughJackman for hosting this year’s Tony Awards and for calling me an hour ago to say, ‘Suck it!'”
The nominations for the 2014 Tony Awards will be announced live on Tuesday, April 29th from New York City.
The 68th Annual Tony Awards will be broadcast on CBS June 8th at 8PM.
