5 Books to Read Before Their Movies Come Out This Year

If a number of movie titles coming out this year sound familiar, it’s probably because you’ve already heard of them – as books. With bestselling titles, such as the Hunger Games series, becoming box office blockbusters, Hollywood is taking notice and making their versions of beloved published stories. They say that books are always better than their movie counterparts, so why not really test that theory? Before their movies come out, take the time to read the paperback or hardback stories – they tend to have a lot more detail in them than can physically be shown in the confines of a two-hour film.

Here are 5 great books that have movies based on them releasing this year:

1. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

This sweet yet slightly melancholy novel tells the story of terminally ill teenager Hazel who falls in love with Augustus, a boy also stricken with cancer. Brace yourself: this one is a major tearjerker!

2. Winters Tale by Mark Helprin

Dually set in the 19th century and modern-day Manhattan, this fantasy story tells the tale of a middle-aged thief and the young dying girl he inevitably meets – and falls in love with!

3. Divergent by Veronica Roth

Pegged as ‘the next Hunger Games,’ Veronica Roth’s debut novel  (the first in a trilogy set) revolves around a post-apocalyptic dystopian Chicago where the people separate themselves into one of five different factions. When 16-year-old Tris falls under more than just one faction, she finds herself struggling.

4. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

The murder mystery with an ending twist is told from two perspectives: the husband of a woman who has gone missing (and possibly dead) and the missing wife herself.

5. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

The third and final book in Suzanne Collins’ hit series finds Katniss Everdeen carrying out a revolution as she fights against the corrupt Capitol from the supposedly rumored – and very real – District 13.
