Teachers are often like students’ second parents when it comes to the amount of time spent and the influence they have – and for one male tutor, he became a parent for 60 kids financially! Earlier this month, dozens of students at Uintah Elementary School in Salt Lake City, UT had their lunch trays taken away from them when it was discovered they had negative balances in their accounts that paid for the lunches. The lunch trays were already full of food on them, but were snatched away, and instead of regular lunches, they were given just fruit and milk. There were a lot of tears and the children were visibly upset after the occurrence – and rightfully so.

After seeing that, Kenny Thompson didn’t want history to repeat itself if he could help it. Thompson, a tutor and mentor at several Texas schools as well as a father, didn’t want to see the same exact thing happen at his Houston, TX school Valley Oaks Elementary School, so he paid off the lunch account balances of over 60 Valley Oaks students.

“I know that’s probably a situation at my school, and the school my son goes to, and the other schools I mentor at. So I came in and inquired about it,” Thompson has said.

Not only did the kind man inquire about it, he shelled out $465 out of his own pocket to help pay for those children whose accounts could potentially be affected. Many of the kids are already on lunch discounts amounting to a mere 40 cents a day.
