The Internet isn’t always the nicest of places, with online bullying being all-too-common and rude comments often filling the World Wide Web. Sometimes, though, it can actually be a place of universal kindness. After all, thanks to the kind-hearted ways of total strangers, a broke father was given the opportunity to attend his oldest son’s high school graduation. Last month, a user named branch455 (real name: Troy Branch) posted a heart wrenching request on a Reddit thread about helping people cross achievements off their personal bucket lists. Branch wrote, “I want to see my son graduate from high school. Don’t have the resources to travel the 300 miles. Graduates Friday May 30th.”
Branch, a father whose finances were “stretched pretty thin as of late because of excessive medical bills,” said he didn’t have the funds to travel from his Florida home in Tallahassee to Eutis, where his son was. Shortly after his May 19 post, Reddit users kicked into high gear in the kindness realm, helping the poor father get a cheap roundtrip ticket via Megabus. One very selfless Reddit user traded in his Holiday Inn points to secure Branch a hotel room, while others even offered to drive him from the Orlando bus stop to his hotel.
On May 30, the proud father was able to live his dream of witnessing his oldest son graduate from high school. Thanks to the financial support lent by kind folks on the Internet, Branch was also able to spend time with both of his sons, taking them to the movies and to the flea market – the latter being one of their favorite things to do when the boys were younger.
Gratefully overwhelmed over the outpouring of kindness, Branch graciously thanked the incredible Reddit users, saying, ““You have turned one s@#$tty week into something really special and heart warming.” The proud father also promised to “pay it forward.”
