It’s not everyday that you hear of anything running on an honor system these days – much less a business! In this day and age, many people cannot just leave their door unlocked even when they’re in the house because of the dangers and dishonesty that surround us. However, there’s one extremely unique coffee shop that is like finding a diamond in the rough that is entirely run on an honor system.
If you’re ever in Valley City, North Dakota, make sure to invite everyone who can come: The Vault, a downtown Valley City coffee shop, is actually saving major bucks on the cost of having employees… because they have none! The day David Brekke and Kimberly, his wife, opened up the shop in October they decided that they wanted people to serve themselves and pay on the answer system.
“At the time I didn’t realize how unique that was, I thought it just made sense. And I found out later by Googling…there really isn’t anything else like it,” said co-owner/operator David Brekke.
Brekke spent a whopping 3.5 years covering the former bank into the shop. He hopes that they want to turn the room into a new bakery next door, within the next few years.
“It’s a great place to sit where it’s quiet and read and little by little there’re more and more people coming in all the time,” said regular LeRoy Triebold.
