Some extra money (and a lot of heart!) goes a long way, as a stranger quickly learned on a routine trip to the department store. While waiting in a line that seemed to be stuck, a stranger went to the front of the line to find the culprit: a young boy, no older than five or six years old. The cashier was repeatedly telling the boy that he didn’t have enough money for a doll he wanted to purchase. Innocently, the child asked, “Are you sure that I don’t have enough money?” To gratify him, the cashier counted the money one last time, apologetically telling him he really didn’t have enough for the doll. The boy was returning the doll when the stranger approached, asking the boy whom he was buying the doll for.
The boy explained, “I wanted to give this doll to my sister. I have to give it to my mom so that she can give it to my sister when she meets her. My Dad told me that sis has gone to be with God and that Mommy is going to see God very soon as well. So, I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister. I told dad to tell mom to wait until I come back. The hospital is just outside and dad didn’t know that I am going here to buy a gift for my sister. I love my mom and I wish she doesn’t have to leave me, but dad said she has to go to be with my sister.”
He looked sadly at the doll and the stranger’s heart almost stopped. Feeling sorry for him, the stranger asked the boy to count his money one final time, adding some of their own money to the pot without the boy noticing. The amount ended up being more than enough for the doll – with even some extra left over! The boy thanked God for having enough money and then explained to the kind stranger that before he went to bed last night, he prayed to God to make sure he had enough money for the doll. The boy added, “I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mom, but I think it is too much to ask God for that. But still, He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose!”
The stranger went home and unable to get the encounter out of their head, they remembered the local news report from the day before: a drunk truck driver had hit the car of a young woman and a little girl. The little girl was dead on arrival while the mother was left in a coma. Putting two and two together, the stranger had a strong feeling both stories were connected – the woman and little girl HAD to be the family of the young boy. The following day, the news reported an update to the story: the mother had passed away. The stranger attended the funeral and, with the casket open for last wishes, noticed the young woman was holding a bouquet of white roses. Placed over her chest was the same exact doll the boy (and technically the stranger) had bought!
Even to this day, the love that boy had for his mother and sister is one that is so pure and rare to find these days. It is love that goes beyond even the great divides of life.
