The 20 tallest mountains in America might surprise you when you hear where they’re located. Then again, maybe not.
Denali-Alaska
Alaska takes the cake as it has the tallest mountain in the USA. Standing at well over 20,000 feet, this mountain is an amazing sight to behold.
Mount Whitney-California
It’s not too surprising to find some of the tallest mountains on the West Coast or nearby. This area is known for its imposing mountain ranges.
Mount Elbert-Colorado
Not too far behind California is Colorado, which boasts a mountain that stands in the 14k range along the southern part of the Rocky Mountains. The view from the top is likely amazing if you’re not afraid of heights.
Mount Rainier-Washington
Many of the tallest mountains in the USA can be seen from miles away. Rainier is no different since it tops out at well over 14k.
Gannett Peak-Wyoming
Nearly six hundred feet lower than Rainier, Gannett Peak is still an amazing site. Imagine the first settlers moving west and seeing the amazing mountain ranges in the distance, that must have been a sight.
Mauna Kea-Hawaii
Most people don’t make their way to the islands to do much more than have fun in the waves. But when seeing the sights it’s wise to take note of Manua Kea, which stands over 13 thousand feet high at the peak.
Kings Peak-Utah
Located in the Rocky Mountains like several entries on this list, Kings Peak is another imposing sight that is quite beautiful. One can easily enjoy the way the sunset and sunrise hit the mountains.
Wheeler Peak-New Mexico
There’s something insanely special about how the light hits the mountains in the desert. The way they appear to take on different hues and colors as the daylight rises and darkens as night descends is mesmerizing.
Boundary Peak-Nevada
Nevada isn’t flat, that’s for certain, but this mountain does top out at just over 13k. Considering how much people like to rock climb in this region, that makes for a good time.
Granite Peak-Montana
The Rockies rise and descend all along their length, but their highest points are impressive to see. The imposing formations of rock are a natural wonder that many people enjoy visiting.
Borah Peak-Idaho
Going down the list, Borah Peak isn’t the most impressive site among the tallest mountains, but there is a certain charm to it. Maybe it’s the mountain’s surroundings that make it a little less imposing.
Humphrey’s Peak-Arizona
The funny thing about states known for their desert landscapes is that they’re not flat. They’re also not as hot throughout as some might think.
Mount Hood-Oregon
Not to be outdone, Mount Hood is only a few feet shorter than Humphrey’s Peak. Not only that, but it’s a favorite spot of many of the locals come ski season.
Guadalupe Peak-Texas
There’s almost something regal about this peak when one looks at it. Climbing it would be a pleasure for many avid rock climbers, as is evidenced by the crowds that visit this site.
Black Elk Peak-South Dakota
A lot of people classify this as a hill instead of a mountain. But there’s still a good hike to the top if one wants to see a truly beautiful landscape.
Mount Mitchell-North Carolina
This is actually the highest peak east of the Mississippi if one can believe that. It’s not exactly a massive mountain, but it’s still impressive.
Clingman’s Dome-Tennessee
One can only imagine the types of forces necessary to create the mountain ranges of the West. But that does make it easy to wonder why the mountains are notably shorter the further east one goes.
Mount Washington-New Hampshire
In the northeastern part of the USA, this mountain is king as it’s the highest in the region. It’s also kind of beautiful in the right light.
Mount Rogers-Virginia
While it looks more like another rolling hill, this is the highest point in Virginia. It does look serene though.
Panorama Point-Nebraska
Located in Kimball County, this kind of proves that Nebraska isn’t a boring, no-elevation state. It’s several thousand feet beneath the tallest mountains, but it’s still something.
