Staying calm is an art that some of us (me) have trouble with. When life gets hectic and things get out of control, it can be difficult to keep your cool and maintain your calm demeanor. Staying calm is not easy. In fact, it’s downright difficult when it seems that everything is going wrong and nothing is working out as it’s supposed to. We all have those days, and staying calm in the midst of our frustration can actually improve the situation. Here are three tips that will help you stay calm when things are spiraling out of control.
When you feel yourself starting to lose your patience, walk away. I don’t care if you’re in the middle of a public debate with a store manager – tell her you’ll be back when you calm down. Staying in a situation when you feel your anger rising is a bad idea. Walk away and regain control of your emotions.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself when things are out of control and you’re losing your patience is to calm down by crying. Tears make everything better. A good, hard, long cry can make things look a lot better. Perspective is a good thing; and tears can provide that for you.
Try to Remember the Good
It’s not always easy when things are going wrong but if you can take a few minutes to remember all the good in your life, you’ll be thankful you did. It’s not easy, but it’s doable. Sometimes all it takes is a few good minutes of remembering how sweet your kids are (even though they might be the reason you are losing your usual calm) and how much your husband loves you and how happy you are in any other moment than this particular one.
