Being married is like living with your best friend with benefits. You love him most of the time, can’t understand how he gets through life without actually hearing anything anyone says half the time, and you consider yourself the luckiest girl on earth all the time. Even when he’s being a complete bonehead, he’s still your bonehead. However, if you want to keep your relationship healthy, there are things you need to make sure you say to each other and do to each other on a regular basis.
We’re In This Together
When one of you loses a job, or is diagnosed with an illness, or goes through any sort of difficult time, you need to know that you’re in it together. Make a habit of reminding the other. Additionally, it’s also important you both know you’re in it together when things are really, really good.
This Is Your Thing
I can whip up a gorgeous three tier wedding cake with perfect fondant and details so delicate they make your eyes hurt, without blinking an eye. When it comes to cooking actual food, however, I may or may not have started a fire in our kitchen at one point. My husband, on the other hand, is a gourmet cook who should have his own show on the Food Network (he’s a banker, and just as good at that). One of the best things in our relationship is the fact that we both recognize we are each much better at different things, and we are both happy to hand over the reigns to those things so the other can take control.
Right Now I Wouldn’t Be Too Mad If You Walked Into the Wall and It Really Hurt
Okay, so maybe just saying you’re angry at your spouse is a better way to say you’re angry, but that one is so much more fun. When you’re mad, ignoring it does not make it better. In fact, ignoring only makes it that much worse. You need to be able to communicate your feelings towards one another if you have any hope of a lasting relationship.
