Sometimes the simplest thing can make you feel the best. Whether it’s a simple phrase, a smile or just the simple appreciation of someone else, it makes you feel good about yourself, it makes them feel good for making you feel good and there really isn’t anything like it. I often find myself appreciative of a kind word or gesture from a loved one or stranger, and I wonder how I can make others feel that same sense of happiness. Being kind is something I strive to teach my kids, and that means modeling it for them. Here are three simple ways you can make someone else feel great.
Say Thank You
When someone does something nice for you, one of the kindest things you can do to repay them is to thank them for their kindness and tell them how much it means to you that they did something for you. Sure, a simple, “Thank you,” is always nice, but sometimes it can feel automatic and less personal. To make someone feel really great, define why it is you are thankful for their actions. You’ll be surprised how great this can make a person feel.
It can be tedious arguing with others or having a difference of opinion with someone all the time, but if you take the time to tell a loved one or coworker that you appreciate their differences, it can make them feel really great. For example, tell your friend that you appreciate his love of another football team even if you’re constantly debating over it because it makes your friendship more interesting.
It’s easy to get caught up in being right that you cannot admit to yourself that you are wrong. We’re all wrong on occasion and sometimes the best way to make someone feel good is to take a deep breath and admit to them that you are wrong.
