With wedding season approaching, many people are planning their nuptials in full force; and half the world is cheering for them while the other half is screaming at them not to do it. Why are so many people opposed to marriage? Perhaps it’s the fact that approximately 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce these days. It’s a staggering number, but that doesn’t mean it’s what’s in store for your marriage. If you want to get a head start on a successful marriage, it begins with understanding the three biggest reasons for divorce (and learning how to avoid falling prey to any of them).

Lack of Trust

Trust is not easily earned, but it’s certainly easily taken away. When a couple goes through something that causes the trust in their marriage it waver, it’s difficult to move on. Some couples can move forward and learn to trust again – but it’s not easy – while others simply cannot do it. Some of the biggest reasons for a lack of trust include lying, cheating, stealing, and other forms of dishonesty.

No Communication

When you neglect to communicate with your spouse, you’re headed down a slippery slope. It could be lack of communication that seems insignificant just as much as it can be an obvious lack. For example, the couple who doesn’t communicate about finances, kids, decisions, vacations, home, or their feelings is less likely to remain married than the couple that takes the time to discuss these things regularly.

Getting Married Too Soon

Before we get into this one, please know that not everyone who marries quickly is going to end up divorced. Many quickly married couples last a lifetime. It all really depends on the reason for your quick wedding. Many couples who wed too soon do so for reasons such as military deployment, to avoid living in “sin” as some refer to it, because of an unplanned pregnancy, or because they feel their biological clock is ticking and it’s the right time to get married and quickly become pregnant. None of these are good reasons to wed and all of them are leading causes of divorce.
