Promises That Make Marriage Stronger

When you get married you say vows. These vows include loving, cherishing, and caring for one another for life. However, if you really think about it, these are pretty broad vows, and if you really want to uphold your vows you have to do something to make them work. My husband and I figured this out a while back and have since made a point to make vows for our vows. These little promises are the key to our marriage, and the reason we’ve been able to make our vows last over the course of the past 11 years.

We Will Never Sit on Separate Couches

Once, when we first started dating, we had a conversation regarding our parents and how we did not understand why they always sat on separate pieces of furniture when watching movies or reading. Of course, we were 18 and completely in love and swore up and down we would never be the couple who sits on opposite pieces of furniture when spending time together. Now, 11 years later, we still sit together when we’re together, and that means there’s more cuddling, more closeness, more hand holding, and more kissing. And more love.

Never Let Our Kids Come Between Us

We never wanted to be the couple whose kids dominate our entire lives and turn us into a couple who has only them in common. When our first daughter was only a few weeks old, we did the hardest thing we ever had to do and called my parents to watch her so we could go to dinner, alone, on a date. We figured if we didn’t start early, we’d never start. We’ve been going on weekly dates ever since, and we love that time alone.

To Always Have Each Other’s Back

One thing that is important to us is that we always stand united when times are tough. When my husband is having a bad day, I’m right there with him trying to make it better, and he does the same for me. I work from home, and our two daughters, who are four and one, sure do make it difficult for me to breathe some days. My husband recognizes this, and when he sees that I’m getting a little crazed, he takes the kids out of the house for a few hours to give me time to relax.
