Having a baby is a joyous occasion, but it can also wreak havoc on your marriage if you aren’t careful. Many parents are guilty of letting their new little bundles of joy take precedence over their marriage, which can lead to resentment and unhappiness for both partners. Before your baby arrives, or even if he or she already has, you need to learn how make sure your marriage remains intact despite having a third wheel all the time.
Stick Together
Parenting is not easy, and anyone who says it is, is crazy. While you are both learning something new every day, remember that you are both learning together, and snidely correcting the other on his diapering techniques or becoming angry at the other for falling asleep during dinner after being up all night with the baby, remember that you are a team, and you can make this easier on one another.
Talk About It
If something is bothering you, speak up. Additionally, if you feel that the baby is taking over your life, agree to talk about something else for an hour when you’re on a date so that you both remember that you are adult human beings, and not just parents. You may also consider marriage counseling to help you communicate with your partner better.
Give Thanks
When your spouse does something to help, even if it doesn’t help at all, try to remember to say thank you. Even if he did it all wrong, yelling at him doesn’t make him want to try again, and it doesn’t make him love you more. Say thanks and move on.
Take A Break
You both need to take a break from parenting from time to time. Mom needs time away, and dad can give that to her by keeping the baby for a few hours. Additionally, mom and dad need time away together to keep their marriage healthy. Ask a grandparent to watch your little one and get out of the house.
