President Barack Obama shopped at a Gap store in New York City on March 11, picking up some tops for his wife Michelle Obama and for their daughters Sasha and Malia. Obama visited the Manhattan Gap in order to show his support for the store’s recent decision to raise minimum wages. Gap employees will now receive to $10.10, up from $7.25.
Obama spent $154.85 on two sweaters for his daughters and a bought a blue workout jacket for the First Lady. “For Michelle, I have no idea what to get. Maybe we should buy some socks,” he said before deciding on the jacket. “It never hurts to bring something back when you’ve been on a road trip. You get bonus points when you go home,” the POTUS said. “I think the ladies will be impressed by my style sense.”
At the retailer’s 42nd street and 3rd Avenue location Tuesday afternoon, a clerk suggested a V-neck sweater for his daughters. “I’m worried the V-neck is going to slip,” said the protective father.
When it came time to swipe his credit card, Obama joked to the cashier, “Oh, wow. So, you can sign the machine?” Then he quickly added, “They had these around the last time I shopped.” Clearly, the President doesn’t do much of his own shopping.
It is normally Mrs. Obama who is making headlines with fashion related stories. She has established herself as one of the most fashion-forward First Ladies of all time and has gotten props mixing both high end fashion designers and store brand designs. The FLOTUS’s favorite stores include J. Crew, White House Black Market, and Talbots. Her favorite designers to wear include Thakoon, Naeem Kahn, Tracy Reese, Jason Wu, Narciso Rodriguez, and Michael Kors.
