The 20 states with the smallest population sound like great places to live. If you don’t like crowds, it might be worth the move.
Iowa-3.2 million
There’s more political importance in Iowa than many other states. It also has one of the smallest populations in the country.
Nevada-3.18 million
One has to remember that many of the people who come to Nevada are visitors and are not staying. If the number of visitors were counted, this would probably be one of the most populous areas in the world.
Arkansas-3.01 million
The natural beauty of this state is what draws plenty of people to it. But again, visitors don’t count toward a state’s overall population.
Mississippi-2.94 million
This is another great place for people to visit, but realizing it has one of the smallest populations is kind of surprising. The South is a great place to vacation, but there’s a lot of pride exuded by the residents.
Kansas-2.94 million
The Sunflower State is a popular location in terms of popular media and folk tales. But as far as the population goes it’s not packed to the borders with people.
New Mexico-2.11 million
As one of the leading states when it comes to energy, one might think more people would be attracted to this location. But it also produces hundreds of millions of barrels of oil per year.
Nebraska-1.97 million
Open farmland and a lot of open land for miles. That’s too much for some folks who need something happening all the time.
Idaho-1.94 million
This is a great recreation state, but it does suffer harsh winters at times. It’s also filled with farmland, which is why it’s so well-known for potatoes.
West Virginia-1.78 million
Welcome to Appalachia, at least in part. There’s some tough living out here, but it’s not the worst. Still, it does test a person’s mettle during the hard seasons.
Hawaii-1.44 million
Life on the Hawaiian islands isn’t as easy as vacationers want to think. It’s spendy, the weather isn’t always reliable, and the postcard moments aren’t always enjoyed by the residents.
New Hampshire-1.4 million
There isn’t a whole lot of land when comparing it to the other states, which is one reason why it has one of the smallest populations. It is an important political state though.
Maine-1.34 million
It’s a beautiful state, it has to be said. But it’s also a tough place to live depending on where you’re at, as this close to the Atlantic, nature asserts its will often.
Montana-1.12 million
Amazingly to this day, Montana is still a wide-open state that has a smaller population than other states. It’s a beautiful place, but again, there’s a lot of wilderness.
Rhode Island-1.09 million
It’s the smallest state in the USA, so it can’t take as many people. But it is a beautiful spot.
Delaware-1.02 million
There are reasons that Delaware is important to the USA, but it’s tough to come up with them at times. Even Wayne’s World couldn’t do much to make this state more interesting.
South Dakota-910k
This is a little surprising, but not that much. There are a lot of people who come through South Dakota and contribute to the tourism trade.
North Dakota-779k
It’s not a small state, but apparently, it’s not as popular to live in as others. The weather in this part of the world does get kind of vicious at times.
Alaska-733k
People come and go in Alaska. It’s a rough place to live since it’s so far north, but the natural beauty is stunning.
Vermont-647k
It’s easy to be envious of states who have smaller populations. There are still a lot of people, but not as many crowds.
Wyoming-581k
Wide-open areas, not a lot of people, and more wilderness than anyone can fully imagine. Now that’s heaven.
