Strategies To Deal With A Difficult Boss On The Job

Nothing can make your workplace more miserable than having a difficult boss.  It will make you dread going to work and can even affect your health, both mental and physical.  You don’t have to deal with this situation while sitting by idly.  There are things you can do to make your work environment better.

The first thing you should do is give some thought as to why you have a problem relationship with your difficult boss.  Have you been disrespectful?  Are they intimidated by you?  Is it simply a personality clash?  Then make a conscious decision to go out of your way to be kind to your difficult boss and show by your actions that you want to have a good working relationship with them.

If, despite your best efforts, things between you and your difficult boss are not showing any improvement it may be time to take it up a notch.  Watch for a time when your boss is in a good mood and ask them if you can have a moment of their time.

First of all, tell them you appreciate them taking the time to sit down with you.  Next tell them all the things you respect and admire about them.  There has to be a few things that you admire.  It pays to think about this ahead of time so you are prepared with a truthful list.

Next, you will have to dive into the real meat of the conversation.  Tell your boss that you feel there is some tension between the two of you and ask them if you have done anything to cause a strain.  Be open-minded to their thoughts and apologize if necessary.  It is possible that they have no problem with you and are in fact going through a personal situation that is weighing on them.

State how much you want to have a good working relationship and ask what you can do to make that happen.  With any luck, things will be looking up for you and your difficult boss will be difficult no longer.
