15 Jobs That Don’t Make Sense

There are at least 15 jobs out there that don’t make sense, and amazingly, they’re not all in government work. But these jobs, yikes.

Lifeguard at the Olympics

Wikipedia

Think about what a lifeguard does, and then think about the people they are generally there to help. Sure, it might help to have someone on hand if accidents happen, but with so many powerful swimmers at hand, why is this necessary?

Professional Paint Drying Watcher

Wikipedia

Not only is this a useless job, it’s incredibly boring. Painters can do this on the job or have someone on their crew who is designated to do this.

Self-Storage Manager

Wikipedia

Sure, someone needs to be around to make certain no one breaks in, but can’t a security guard do this? More than that, can’t a guard be trained to help people when needed?

Professional Snuggler

Wikipedia

There’s no way that this is a real job, but apparently it is. This profession, if you can call it that, is also kind of creepy since it’s only a couple of steps away from being an escort.

Professional Sleeper

Wikipedia

People that do this are typically called ‘test subjects’. But apparently, there are those out there who are willing to pay a person while they’re experiencing a good night’s rest.

Mall Santa…in Jerusalem

Wikipedia

Can you say ‘wow’ without sounding ironic? Granted, some folks in Jerusalem might enjoy this, but it’s more likely that Santa’s lap is rather empty during the holidays.

Sign Spinners

Every business needs a little help remaining visible, right? But the idea of having someone wear a ridiculous costume and spin a sign, in any weather no less, is kind of reaching.

CD Rack Manufacturers

Wikipedia

At one time this was a necessity for CD collectors everywhere. But these days everything is online, and this has become less of a need and more of a luxury, if that.

Toll Booth Operator

Wikipedia

This is one of the jobs that don’t make sense considering that it’s easy to automate, so keeping someone in the booth is kind of pointless. A maintenance worker who’s on-call would likely be a cost-effective replacement.

Restroom Attendant

Wikipedia

This job used to be a little more prestigious, but now it’s more of an unneeded expense. Seriously, are you that lazy that you can’t be bothered to pick up your own towel?

Pet Psychologist

Wikipedia

Seriously, people want to add a job for just about everything. Some pets even have their own personal masseuse, no joke.

Pet Food Taster

Wikipedia

It’s okay to love your pet and want the best for them. But draw the line at letting someone taste the stuff that’s going to be put into their bodies.

Video Store Owner

Wikipedia

Back in the 80s and 90s, this was a mark of prestige since if you owned at least one or more stores you were someone to get to know. These days the old stores are relics that are hard to spot and even harder to justify in terms of cost.

Weatherman…in the Pacific Northwest

Wikipedia

The states in this region indeed have chaotic weather to deal with sometimes, but the best thing a weatherman can say is that it’s going to rain, or it won’t. Trying to nail down the weather in this region is like trying to hit a fly with a paperclip.

Elevator Operator

Wikipedia

This is one more of those jobs that don’t make sense, and that hails from a different time when elevators were far more temperamental and not quite as reliable. Still, even in those times, operators were basically there to push a button and possibly open and close the door.
