There are at least 10 signs you’re eating too much protein. It’s a necessary component of your daily diet, but there is a limit.

Bad breath

This indicates that you’re in ketosis, which occurs when your body is burning fat instead of glucose as an energy source. Your breath does become kind of foul during this time, as the acetone that is being burned does manage to register in your breath.

You’re dehydrated

This isn’t always an indication of too much protein in your diet. But if you start urinating more often it means that your kidneys are working overtime to take care of the excess nutrients. Unfortunately, that leads very quickly to dehydration.

Eating isn’t always going to pack on muscle like you want. The more calories you consume, the more your body will pack away what it can’t use. That means a high-protein diet is going to overload the body and force it to convert that excess protein into sugar that’s stored as fat.

Pain in your abdomen is a sign of something wrong

There are a lot of reasons for GI discomfort, but eating too much protein with little to no fiber to balance it out can cause constipation, nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pains. It does take a bit more work for your body to break down extra protein, and adding more and more is only going to make things worse.

Heart disease

Plant-based proteins can help your heart quite a bit, while animal-based tend to increase the risk of heart disease. This doesn’t mean that animal-based is all bad, but that you should consume it in moderation, instead of overloading on it.

Trouble with your kidneys and liver

This is especially important if you have a kidney or liver disease. Breaking down all that protein is enough work for a healthy body, but trying to push too much on a system that is already damaged is asking for trouble.

Your thoughts are foggy

What affects the body is sometimes a byproduct of your mental state. But what affects the body will also affect your cognitive processes, since everything is connected in one way or another and can’t go without being affected in turn.

Lack of performance

When your body consumes too much protein it will store too much of it as glucose. In this manner, it converts to fat, and the more that’s consumed, the more is stored, and at some point, your energy will drop as the body begins to consume muscle and store fat.

You’re not gaining muscle

It’s recommended that you eat some sort of fast-acting protein after a workout, but not too much. Some people overload and the protein is therefore stored away instead of being used.

You have no desire for protein

Your body will send you messages on occasion that are more like gut feelings than glow-in-the-dark signs to follow. This is an indication that you don’t need what you think you do, or that you need something else that you don’t normally consume. It’s wise to listen.
