As someone who suffered from the flu for only the second time in her entire life this past week, I can tell you that it is the least amount of fun you will ever have. It is actual, literal torture. But there is so much in my life that I have to care for that I can’t get sick. So even when my body is failing me, I’m still up and at it – tears in my eyes, misery and all. And the flu – if you’ve ever had it – does not allow you to get up and move. It’s debilitating and miserable, and it lasts a good week. I’m not 100%, but I’m better. And I’m insanely jealous of the people in my life that never seem to get sick. They never, ever get sick. I used to be one of those people. But I guess with a full-time work-from-home job, a house, four kids, and a husband and all the extracurricular activities in my life, I don’t take care of myself as well as I once did. And that’s on me. So it’s inspired me to think about what it is that people who never seem to get sick do so much better than those of us who can’t seem to shake a constant head cold.
They Eat Well
It’s not always possible to eat a healthy meal when the world is busy, but people who never get sick usually eat a lot better than the rest of us. They take the time to cook healthy meals and make good eating decisions, and they avoid things like fast food and other bad eating habits.
They Exercise
Whether it’s a 20 minute walk around the neighborhood, a yoga session or even a night of dancing, healthy people exercise because it’s what they do best. These are the people that care for their bodies in a way that matters, and it helps them build a stronger immune system.
They Sleep Well
This is one thing I do well. My husband and I go to bed no later than 10 pm each night and sleep until 6 am during the week. That solid night of sleep is very helpful, leaves us feeling rested and well, and it makes us feel good about ourselves. Healthy people tend to sleep, and it gives their bodies the strength they need to stay healthy.
They Rest
So…this is not something I know how to do. I never take a day off. I never rest. Time that’s not spent on the run, working or parenting is non-existent in my life, and most of those things are all being done at the same time. Healthy people are the kind of people who take the time to rest.
They Wash Their Hands
With almost 1-year-old twins and two older kids, I am a hand-washer. We go through Bath & Body Works soap in our house at least 3 a week. It helps to have clean hands and it’s good practice. Healthy people wash their hands regularly, and that’s just something that we should all do more of.
