Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago
Formerly named the Children’s Memorial Hospital, this place is still the same innovative and amazing children’s hospital it’s always been. This is the hospital with one of the biggest vascular ring programs and treatment facilities in the world. This disease affects children so rarely that most people can’t even diagnose it. However, this hospital has seen 500 kids with the issue and been able to help them get better. They’ve also designed a CT machine that looks like a cool yellow submarine that makes kids want to get it and sit still instead of scaring them.

Babies born prior to 37 weeks gestation are considered preemies. Most babies born after the 32 week mark are going to stay in the hospital for a few months and go home healthy and without complication. Babies born before 32 weeks have a slightly slimmer survival rate. However, babies born before 28 weeks have a much lower rate of survival. Babies born prior to 22 weeks have no chance of survival. Babies born between 22 and 27 weeks are not usually expected to survive; unless they are sent here. This hospital boasts a 78 percent success rate in keep babies born between 22 and 27 weeks alive and well.

University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital
Just a year and a half ago, after a 13-year-old boy was in an accident that virtually destroyed his liver, the staff at this hospital performed a life-saving surgery that has this boy back to his everyday activities living his life as he previously did. The staff here decided to take his liver out of his body, repair the damage and replace the same damaged liver with its repairs. He’s had a few more surgeries since to perfect the technique, but he’s doing just fine. This is another hospital with private NICU rooms, and they’ve created a way to discover teens who have eating disorders when they come into the ER.

Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston
This is the hospital with the world’s only pediatric lymphoma research lab. It’s also the hospital in which Dr. Angus Wilfong used new laser technology used to treat prostate cancer to perform brain surgery on kids who suffer from seizures that are unresponsive to medication. He created a laser to do just that. His success rate is 100 percent after using his laser to treat seizures in children who are not free of seizures. Add to that the fact that these children are only required to stay for one night in the hospital and you have yourself a recipe for success.

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
Regina Jakacki, M.D. works for this hospital. Several years ago, she was working on a case that involved a little girl with a form of cancer so bad that she was undergoing her sixth round of chemo. Glioma is a brain tumor that should have killed this little girl, but thanks to Dr. Jakacki and her research, she’s alive and well. Jakacki is the director of pediatric neuro-oncology, and she developed a vaccine designed to kill specific tumor cells. After using it on this particular little girl, her tumor shrank 80 percent and prolonged her life. It’s since worked on more than half the patients Jakacki has treated with the vaccine. She’s saving lives and curing cancer in some patients.

One of the most amazing things about this hospital is the fact that they have private NICU rooms. What this means for the parents of children who are born and taken to the NICU is that they don’t have to spend precious time with their babies in the midst of the noise and commotion of other families also visiting their children. As the new mother of preemie twins, I can assure you that a private NICU would have been a lifesaver when our babies were in the hospital. It’s also the hospital that designed the new pill that treats underlying causes of CF in children.

Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee
If your child has a complicated heart problem, this is the hospital of choice. The success rate for taking care of children with difficult and complicated heart issues is 85 percent; the highest in the world. This is a hospital that’s also been credited with using breakthrough technology to find mutated genes that cause a number of genetic health problems. Other hospitals in the country are unable to provide this kind of research and care to patients, which is what makes this hospital one of the best in the country as far as taking care of sick kids.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center
Children at this particular hospital are privy to the extensive research and experience of medical professionals who can do what very few other medical professionals can do. This hospital led a breakthrough with something called an L-VAD (and if you ever watch Grey’s Anatomy, you know exactly what this is). It’s a temporary valve that lets the heart rest and regenerate on those who have heart problems. A little girl was first given a temporary L-VAD here while the virus that caused her heart to fail was treated and cured. The innovative technique saved this little girl’s life.

Boston Children’s Hospital
It was here that medical professionals found a way to create a heart valve for children with heart problems that actually grows with the child. What this does is reduce the number of potentially risky and dangerous surgeries that a child has to go through over the course of his or her life. This is also the h hospital in which staff spent 14 hours replacing 6 organs at the same time in a child only 9-years-old. Her tumor had taken over her abdomen and she would have died without all these new organs, which is something that’s never been done before. Boston Children’s is also paving the way to curing autism.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
This hospital is one you never want your child to visit. However, if your child is too sick for your local doctors to handle, you do want them to refer you to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Staffed with the most knowledgeable, comprehensive staff of medical professionals in the country, it is the number one hospital around for children’s cancer treatment. The hospital spends approximately $30 million each year on just research to help eradicate and cure diseases and illnesses that affect children.
