You hear all the time that meditation, exercise, yoga, taking a deep breath and thinking happy thoughts will have you feeling less stressed and happier in next to no time, but sometimes you need some other method of lowering your stress level. There’s nothing wrong with any of these things, and they are all great ways to lower your stress level, but they aren’t the end all and be all of less stress. Sometimes something as simple as asking someone for a hug can lower your stress level and make you feel that much better.
Dance
Does Ellen DeGeneres ever looked stressed? No; of course, we don’t know her in real life so we can’t say for sure whether or not she is a giant basket case of stress related feelings on a regular basis, but she sure doesn’t look like it. Aside from her ability to never worry about her finances and her gorgeous wife, her lack of stress could very well be a direct result of her love of dance. Dancing it out can have a huge impact on your stress level. Turn up the radio when your favorite song comes on and go a little crazy. Looking stupid dancing is nothing compared to feeling stressed. I promise you’ll feel better by the time you’re finished with your dance.
Control What You Can
Sure, deep breathing helps lower your stress level, but so does forgetting what you can’t control and focusing on what you can control. Stressed about your upcoming family vacation? You cannot control whether or not your flight is delayed because of bad weather, but stressing about it isn’t doing you any good. Instead, focus on what you can control, such as packing and getting to the airport with enough additional time for a cocktail or two before departure.
Remember the Good Times
See you later, stress! Your current state of stress has nothing on your past. So the weather is gross and you know you can’t get anywhere without getting soaked and it’s stressing you out. Forget about that and remember that gorgeous day on the beach when everything was perfect and you didn’t have a care in the world. You’ll feel better.
