Practices our grandparents followed are plentiful and some folks still keep such traditions alive. But sometimes it’s easier to say than do. Amazingly, some people still cling to a few of the old ways.

Using handkerchiefs, not tissues
Sure, handkerchiefs got crusty and messy sometimes, but a good washing took care of that. Tissues are flimsy and don’t last, making them less useful in the long run.

Using cloth diapers
Some of the practices our grandparents followed were useful, but this is one that people would gladly debate. Anything you can wash and reuse is great, especially since it keeps them from clogging landfills.

Limiting access to junk food
Grandparents were blunt back in the day, weren’t they? Some would make it clear that too much junk food would make us fat, and sadly they were right.

Calling older people Mr. or Mrs.
Some people still do this, but it’s not nearly as prominent as it used to be. Like many practices our grandparents followed, this one is often ignored.

Make baked goods from scratch
Who’s got the time to make cookies, pies, and other baked goods from scratch? It’s about making the time to create quality goods, not mass-produced, over-processed junk.

Eat breakfast at the table
The practices our grandparents followed were great for many reasons. Having breakfast at the table in the morning brought people together and gave them something to talk about.

Learn to fix things on their own instead of paying for them
Imagine how many businesses would go under if this happened. It’s also easy to think that it’s a conspiracy that has fueled a lot of specialized services.

Sitting in the sun
There was a time when taking in a few rays was considered a cure-all for a lot of conditions. It might not be that way today, but it’s still a good remedy to lighten your mood.

Smacking a hand when a child is naughty
No one is stating that hitting people is a good thing, but as a reminder, a quick swat on the hand is a good way to remember when one has crossed the line. No matter what anyone says, a swat is a discipline, anything else is borderline to full abuse.

Mailing money in envelopes
This is still done today, but there are far more secure ways to go about sending money through the mail. With all the phone apps available though, it takes a simple push of a button to get paid.

Having a picnic on the side of the road
This is one of those practices that should be observed more often. One doesn’t need to travel for hours to have a picnic. Pick a nice shady spot at the side of the road and relax.

Hang laundry on a clothesline
Depending on the weather this may or may not work as well as people want. But all the same, there is something to say about linen that’s air-dried and windblown.

Grow and hunt your food
Sadly, these are skills that are slowly but surely going by the wayside. Some folks wouldn’t know how to plant a seed or shoot a deer if their lives depended on it.

Using rainwater for more than one purpose
It’s illegal in some states to collect rainwater, but for safety reasons, not because the water company has a monopoly on what we use and drink. This is one of the best ways to make use of rainwater, provided it’s kept clean.

Eat at home regularly
Going out is more of a treat, and that’s the way things used to be. These days, too many people see it as a necessity for a busy lifestyle, while staying at home to cook isn’t time-effective.

Finding cheap, affordable entertainment
Does anyone remember back to the days when being a kid meant going outside and finding things to play with? There was little to no advanced technology and a backyard could be a kingdom of wonders with very little effort.

Fix things and reuse them instead of throwing them out
Recycling is a debatable subject, but reusing was once a necessity since tossing things out wasn’t always the best solution. Learning to reuse things over and over was a prized skill back in the day.

Don’t drive as much
If it wasn’t more than a few miles or didn’t require a vehicle, there was no need to drive. These days, people will drive to the corner store and back just because it’s easier.

Don’t rely on electronics as much
This wasn’t as big of a deal back in the day since people didn’t have an abundance of technology to distract them. These days, well, it’s not quite as easy unless one makes it that way.

Minimize doctor visits
This might sound a little counterproductive to staying healthy, but there’s an explanation. Instead of going to the doctor for every sneeze and sniffle, it’s easier to realize that one can survive without taking up residence in a hospital or clinic just to be safe.
