15 Foods Harmful For Birds

If you are a bird owner or just enjoy caring for your feathered friends, it is super important to know what is safe for them to eat and what could harm them. Here is a rundown of 15 foods you should definitely avoid giving to birds.

Avocado

Here is the deal with avocados: they contain a substance called persin, which is pretty harmless to us humans but toxic to birds. Even a small amount can cause heart damage and, in severe cases, respiratory failure in birds. So, next time you are making guacamole, make sure it is just for the human guests!

Chocolate

Chocolate is a big no-no for birds, just like it is for dogs. It contains theobromine and caffeine, which are both toxic compounds to birds. Eating chocolate can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and, unfortunately, even death. Keep those sweet treats to yourself, and make sure they are out of beak’s reach.

Onions and Garlic

These kitchen staples can be really harmful to birds. Onions contain sulfur compounds that can irritate a bird’s mouth, esophagus, and crop, and can lead to ulcerations. Garlic contains allicin, another irritant. Both can cause anemia in birds by breaking down their red blood cells. It might make our food tasty, but it is better to keep it away from the birds.

Salt

Birds are super sensitive to salt, which can be toxic to them in large amounts. Too much salt can lead to excessive thirst, dehydration, kidney dysfunction, and even death. So, resist the urge to share salty snacks like chips or pretzels with your bird buddies.

Caffeine

Coffee, tea, soda, and energy drinks might keep us going, but caffeine is a big problem for birds. It can cause cardiac malfunction, rapid heartbeat, hyperactivity, and even cardiac arrest in birds. So, while you enjoy your morning brew, let your bird sip on something safe like water or an appropriate bird-safe herbal tea.

Apple Seeds

While apples themselves are a healthy snack for birds, the seeds are a different story. Apple seeds contain a compound that can release cyanide when digested. Cyanide is toxic to birds, even in small amounts. So, when you are giving them some apple slices, make sure to remove all the seeds first.

Alcohol

This might sound obvious, but even small amounts of alcohol can be dangerous to birds. Alcohol depresses the organ systems of birds and can lead to serious health issues, including death. Birds cannot process alcohol like we do, so keep your beer, wine, and spirits far away from them.

Xylitol

Found in many sugar-free products like gum and candy, xylitol is another no-go for birds. It can lead to a sudden drop in blood sugar levels, liver failure, and other serious health issues. Make sure any treats you give your bird are free from this artificial sweetener.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms can be tricky because some types are fine, but others can be toxic. Certain types of mushrooms can cause digestive upset in birds, and some have been known to cause liver failure. Additionally, since it is hard to distinguish between safe and toxic varieties in the wild, it is safer to keep all mushrooms out of your bird’s diet.

Tomato Leaves and Stems

While the tomato itself is generally safe for birds, the leaves, stems, and green parts of the plant contain solanine, a toxin that can cause gastrointestinal distress. Make sure any tomato pieces you offer your bird are ripe and free of any green parts. Also, washing tomatoes thoroughly can help reduce any residual pesticides.

Dairy Products

Birds do not have the enzymes necessary to digest lactose, which is found in milk and other dairy products. Feeding them dairy can lead to digestive problems and diarrhea. While a little bit might not do serious harm, it is best to keep cheese, milk, and yogurt off their menu. Consider bird-safe alternatives like certain vegetable-based milks that are unsweetened and unflavored.

Raw and Dry Beans

Uncooked beans contain a toxin called hemagglutinin, which is very toxic to birds. Always make sure that any beans you offer your bird are thoroughly cooked to neutralize this toxin. Never give birds raw or dry beans, as they can be harmful. Cooking not only neutralizes toxins but also makes the beans easier to digest and more palatable for birds.

Fried and Fatty Foods

Just like in humans, high-fat diets can lead to health problems in birds, including obesity and liver disease. Foods like fried chicken or fatty meats are much too rich for them. Stick to lean, healthy options if you are sharing your meal. Also, consider offering nuts and seeds in moderation, which provide healthy fats that are essential for their diet.

Citrus Fruits

While not toxic, citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and grapefruit can be highly acidic and may cause stomach upset in birds. They can handle a small amount occasionally, but it is best not to make it a regular part of their diet. Instead, focus on bird-safe fruits like apples and bananas that are less acidic and generally more well-tolerated.

Peanuts

Peanuts are often contaminated with aflatoxins, which can be extremely harmful to birds. Aflatoxins are toxins produced by mold and can lead to liver damage and cancer. If you do feed peanuts, ensure they are fresh, high-quality, and free from any visible mold. Also, buying human-grade peanuts can reduce the risk of aflatoxin exposure since they are subject to stricter quality control standards.
