The History of The Versatile Johnny Depp

When you think of iconic actors in Hollywood look no further than the amazing Johnny Depp. From Captain Jack Sparrow to Sweeney Todd to Edward Scissorhands, the list of memorable characters in Depp's repertoire goes on and on. His performances will ensure that his name lives on forever, and they are the kind of performances that will captivate audiences throughout any era. With the current trial between him and Amber Heard, we thought this would be a great time to remind everyone just how amazing Johnny Depp truly is by giving you a glimpse into his history.
He wanted to be a rockstar
Johnny Depp is one of the most talented actors in recent memory. He brings a kind of aura and energy to his movie roles that are simply difficult to replicate but despite this, he actually had another dream initially, one that you may not have guessed.

Johnny Depp really wanted to be a rockstar when he started out; Depp even dropped out of high school briefly so he could pursue this dream. He returned to school a couple of weeks later and was only encouraged to pursue his dreams by his principal.
Johnny Depp owes a lot to Nicolas Cage
Johnny Depp was a bit fortunate, he got someone to put him on when he started out, and as anyone in Hollywood would tell you, few actors get that lucky in the beginning. The truth is Johnny Depp owes a lot to Nicolas Cage because we simply might never have heard about Depp if it weren’t for Cage.

It was Cage who helped Depp land his first acting gig after connecting him with his agent. Therefore, Depp was only trying to do right by Cage when he offered to clear his debt in 2007, unlike Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp actually repays his debts.
Depp has three siblings
Everything runs in the family for Johnny Depp and his three siblings. His brother, Danny, taught him a lot about books, music, and life itself; Danny is also a Hollywood script-writer and one of the writers that created the script of the hit animated movie, Brave.

Johnny’s elder sister, Christy, doubles as his personal manager, and he has a second sister named Debbie who is a popular teacher and internet personality. Unlike his other siblings, not much is known about Debbie because she prefers to stay out of the limelight.
He was the highest-paid actor in 2012
The Captain Jack Sparrow character worked wonders for Johnny Depp’s career as he became more famous because of it, and with it came the big bucks. In 2012, Johnny Depp was the highest-paid actor according to the Guinness Book of World Records, earning $150 million that year.

The year before that he didn't do too bad either as he earned a total of $75 million that year. His huge paychecks during that period were a result of a couple of commercially successful movies he was featured in; Alice in Wonderland and Pirates of the Caribbean are two of them.
Johnny Depp has never won an Oscar
There was some uproar in some corners when people realized Leonardo DiCaprio hadn’t won an Oscar before he won one recently, which many say was long overdue and may have been due to just the uproar. However, it's even more unthinkable that Johnny Depp doesn’t have an Oscar to his name.

It is honestly quite surprising that Depp has never won an Academy Award despite a string of remarkable performances over the years. How did he not win an Academy Award for his performances as Willy Wonka, Edward Scissorhands, or Jack Sparrow even though he’s been nominated for the Best Actor category a couple of times for those characters?
He has dated a lot of famous women
Courtesy of his good looks and incredible charm, Johnny Depp has had a couple of flings with famous women over the years. Lori Anne Allison was his first wife; after his divorce from her, he got engaged to Jennifer Grey, and when that ended, he went knocking on Sherilyn Fenn’s door.

He soon got involved with his co-star on Edward Scissorhands, Winona Ryder and she actually got a proposal from him. After that ended, Depp found love in Kate Moss, whom he dated for four years before meeting Vanessa Paradis and having two kids with her.
Depp the barbie man
One of the strangest things about Johnny Depp is his love for Barbies; the legendary Jack Sparrow actor simply enjoys playing with Barbies. He admitted this much during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! when he said playing with Barbies was a great thing for parents to do with their kids.

He also described exploring multiple characters along with the Barbies to his daughter’s delight; he would even switch his voice up until his daughter begged him to just do his regular voice instead. Maybe the key to his incredible acting skills was playing different roles with his Barbies as a kid.
Dancing isn’t his strong suit
Johnny Depp is a mysterious man of many talents but dancing isn’t one of them. It is usually the case that talented actors are terrific dancers as well as it sometimes comes with the job but this isn’t the case with Depp who simply isn’t good at dancing, and also has a fear of dancing; Depp reportedly fears dancing more than anything else.

Depp is so bad at dancing that he admitted that he’s never danced in real-life, and only does so when he is required to in a movie. The funny thing is when Captain Jack is required to dance awkwardly, this comes easy to Depp as all he has to do is actually try to dance and it will come off as awkward.
He’s a long-term smoker
You can take Amber Heard and the Dior Sauvages away from Johnny Depp but you probably won’t have as much luck trying to separate him from smoking. Johnny Depp was exposed to smoking at a tender age; he began smoking at only 12-years-old.

He was a true rebel as a youngster and he also has a bad history with alcohol. Describing his struggles with alcohol during an interview, Depp said only he could cure what he had, not whoever he was dating.
He has a humanitarian side too
Johnny Depp not only gets to be a hero on the big screen but in real life as well thanks to his humanitarian side. In 2017, Johnny Depp found some time to visit a children’s hospital in Australia despite his hectic schedule.

He does this quite often as he also visited another hospital in Canada around that same period. Depp turned up in his full Jack Sparrow costume for both visits; he simply wandered around the hospital hallways and greeted patients as his on-screen Pirates of the Caribbean character in real life, there is no way you can hate this guy.
Run-ins with the law
One undesirable consequence of being a rebel is the inevitable clashes with law enforcement officers. Johnny Depp’s good looks are particularly deceiving because he’s never been one to act like a saint, and as a result, he has been in trouble with the police on a couple of occasions.

He got in some trouble with the Police in 1994 and was handcuffed after he reportedly got into a fight with Kate Moss, his then-girlfriend. About five years before then, Depp was arrested but eventually released for assaulting a security guard.
He wanted Jack Sparrow to have gold teeth
Johnny Depp’s rebellious ways have dogged him ever since he was a young chap, and apparently, they continued to do so even when he became a Hollywood star. Johnny Depp wanted his Jack Sparrow character to have gold teeth but he was alone on the idea, and he knew the movie executives wouldn’t buy the idea so he found a way around it.

Depp had his dentist implant some more gold teeth in his mouth in a bid to compel the execs to have the character modified his way; in the end, Jack Sparrow had the gold teeth Depp wanted him to all along. Talk about going the extra mile for your character.
A royal bloodline
Johnny Depp is revered in Hollywood circles courtesy of his immense talent and charisma; he is one of the most high-profile stars in Hollywood, and he’s very well paid for it. But then, Johnny Depp is actually royalty in real life because he is believed to be related to Queen Elizabeth.

A deep dive was taken into Depp’s ancestry, and some interesting findings were made, that not many expected to find. A possible connection to the royal family was found but then finding the link to the royal family requires going back more than five centuries, so not sure if that still counts, though he thinks it does.
He has self-inflicted scars
Johnny Depp might have more money than he ever imagined now despite his recent fall from grace but things were quite difficult for the young Depp growing up. Johnny Depp was exposed to a violent family life as a youngster, and his way of dealing with his pain is even more disheartening than his suffering.

As things got more tough for Depp, he began to cut himself up as a cruel way of dealing with his never-ending pain. We don’t know if cutting himself eased the pain but we do know that Depp still has those self-inflicted scars to date. He has since covered up his scars using tattoos.
Depp led a rough life
All those years ago, when Johnny Depp wasn’t yet the A-list actor he became eventually, he struggled to survive and find his feet. Right about this time, Depp wanted to be a rockstar but like everything else in his life at that point, his music didn’t work out as he planned.

Johnny Depp lived a rough and difficult life he could only have looked back on and smiled. In order to survive, he along with his bandmates, sold pens for a telemarketing firm to earn a living. Depp also lived in a friend’s ’67 Impala for several months.
He was allergic to chocolate
Johnny Depp wasn’t one to load up on chocolate treats as a youngster; not because he didn’t desire it but because he was allergic to chocolate as a child. The allergy meant that he didn’t get to enjoy things like chocolate ice cream, cookies, and shakes like his peers.

Fortunately, his chocolate allergy eventually disappeared as he got older, but it was too late at that point as he still doesn’t eat it much. Ironic since he played the part of Willy Wonka who is known for his amazing chocolate factory, wonder how that role would have gone had his allergy not gone away.
He once got Winona's name tattooed on him
As we mentioned earlier, Johnny Depp has always been a ladies’ man and has never been one to shy away from the ladies. In 1990, Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder starred in Edward Scissorhands and had an on-screen romance that would eventually extend to real life.

Ryder and Depp would eventually get engaged the same year the movie was released; Depp got his "Winona Forever" tattoo at this point. In the end, their romance was short-lived so Depp had his tattoo modified to say "Wino Forever," not the greatest cover-up but it will do.
He has eye defects
It is difficult to imagine something being wrong with Johnny Depp’s eyesight judging from his aura but Depp’s eyesight has never been perfect. Depp has suffered from near-sightedness ever since he was born, and it has progressively gotten worse over the years.

It has gotten to the point where he is nearly blind in his left eye so his depth perception is also very poor. And as proof that money doesn’t fix everything, Depp’s eye condition isn’t one that can be corrected with eye surgery so next time you see Johnny Depp, try to veer to his right.
His fan got a hat
The way celebrities interact with fans says a lot about who they are, and also has an impact on their image and popularity. Amber Heard wouldn’t agree but judging from his interactions with fans, Depp is good-natured; he was filming a movie in Wisconsin once when he came across a young boy named Jack Taylor.

Taylor admired Depp’s hat so he complimented it; that made Depp promise to send Taylor the cap when filming was done. The actor fulfilled his promise of sending him the hat once filming was wrapped up, how amazing is that.
James "Whitey" Bulger isn’t a Johnny Depp fan
Johnny Depp and his Jack Sparrow character have loads of fans and admirers across the globe, and the actor is also known for befriending several popular figures but there was one person that refused to get close to Depp.

That person is the popular crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger, who Depp reached out to on several occasions while he was gearing up to play the role of the gangster in Black Mass. Bulger wanted nothing to do with Depp though, so he declined to speak to the actor after he had heard how the actor was portraying him thus far.
A bizarre funeral request
Johnny Depp’s funeral request is honestly one of the weirdest things we’ve heard of in a while. The famous actor doesn’t want to be buried in an expensive crypt, and he doesn’t want to be mummified either but he wants something even more ridiculous to be done when he dies.

Johnny Depp has stated that he wants his remains to be cremated and poured into a cask of whiskey; he also wants everyone at his funeral to take a sip of it. There can’t be a lot of people that would like to drink some Depp, but if you get invited to the funeral be prepared to do so.
An extensive relationship with Tim Burton
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have worked extensively together, collaborating on remarkable projects like Edward Scissorhands, and Ed Wood. They also worked together to create Sleepy Hollow, which was a horror movie inspired by Washington Irving. Together, Depp and Burton have created characters like Victor Van Dort, Willy Wonka, and The Mad Hatter.

Johnny Depp provided the voice of the character Victor Van Dort in the 2005 animated feature film, The Corpse Bride. They also created Charlie and the Chocolate Factory together in 2005. Edward Scissorhands was the first project Depp and Burton created together.
A lover’s hate
You know that thing they say about a lover’s hate being so powerful? That’s exactly the case with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard; the pair met on the set of a movie and connected instantly. It was a case of love at first sight and they quickly became inseparable but once the initial sparks disappeared, chaos broke out between them.

The former lovers have since been involved in arguably the messiest celebrity divorce in recent memory. Heard accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence and got a restraining order against him. Say what you want about the trial, it's unfortunate that it has come to this for both parties.
Sexiest man alive
Johnny Depp’s acting chops and talent got him to the limelight, but once there, it was his good looks that kept him there. Ladies drool over Depp courtesy of his looks, and he has also been named the Sexiest Man Alive by People Magazine not once, but twice; in 2003, and 2009.

Depp’s physical qualities have also aided his modeling career and made him a coveted celebrity model for brands; his Dior Sauvage deal just might be his most popular brand endorsement. Other brands like H&M, Mont Blanc, Man Ray, and Tom Ford have also used Depp as a spokesmodel.
He owns a private island
It takes one look at Johnny Depp’s private island to realize the talented actor has good taste; his island is quite simply a work of art by itself. The island is basically 45 acres of undisturbed isolated territory in the Bahamas.

It is home to the main property, and a couple of guest houses, all of which are powered by solar power. Depp’s island offers some incredible natural views, and white sand beaches all of which he named after everyone that meant something to Depp, and he even named a section of his island after Heath Ledger.
No dancing but music all-day
Johnny Depp might be terrified of dancing but that doesn’t mean he shies away from music completely as the actor is a skilled musician. We already talked about how he quit school to become a rock star in the 1990s but he also began to play the guitar for P., a defunct rock band he helped form all those years ago.

Ever since the band went under, Depp has been featured on a host of records by the likes of Alice Cooper, Oasis, and Marilyn Manson. Johnny Depp plays the drums, the guitar, and provides backup singing as well, a true triple threat on stage.
He helped create his Jack Sparrow character
We owe the hilarious and remarkably memorable Jack Sparrow character to Johnny Depp more than anybody else, including Disney and its executives. The reason is most of Jack Sparrow’s appearance was designed by Johnny Depp to the dismay of Disney.

Disney initially wanted Jack Sparrow to look more polished when they cast Johnny Depp but Depp quickly saw the character another way. Depp came in and described a filthy, drunk character with slurry speech; this of course didn’t thrill Disney at first but they caved in eventually.
Billion-dollar franchises
Movies that do well at the box office and rake in huge returns serve as a testament to the dexterity of the leading actors behind them. Johnny Depp is certainly quite skilled as an actor so it’s only right that the two movie franchises that Johnny Depp has been associated to have both made about $4 billion.

The reason is so many movies Depp acts in perform so well in the theatres and therefore make a lot of money, with many of his movies generating huge amounts of returns. His Pirate of the Caribbean movies have each made nearly a billion, and Alice in Wonderland alone has made roughly $1 billion.
Citizen of the Comanche Nation
Johnny Depp has portrayed Native American culture on a couple of occasions in his movies but real-life just rings differently. Depp is quite proud of his Native American roots and even has a Native American symbol tattooed on his arm.

As a result of his passion, Johnny Depp was inducted into the Comanche Nation in 2012. His performance in Lone Ranger comes to mind here; Depp portrayed a Native American in full gear, complete with a crow on his head. The actor invested himself in the movie, first by speaking with the Navajo Tribe.
He’s not a fan of award ceremonies
Don’t be outraged that Johnny Depp has been nominated for several Oscar awards but has never won one because the actor himself prefers it this way. Over the course of his remarkable career, Johnny Depp has played a series of characters that earned him nominations for a host of awards including three Oscar nominations.

However, he stated that his preference is to be nominated for an award rather than win it. Depp doesn’t want to be in competition with anyone, and he doesn’t want to have to give an award acceptance speech, what a speech that would be though.
He paid for Hunter S. Thompson’s funeral
It took Hunter S. Thompson dying for people to realize he and Johnny Depp shared an unconventional friendship for many years before Thompson passed away. Their relationship was built on mutual admiration, love, and trust so it was only right for Depp to organize a befitting burial for his old friend.

Thompson’s funeral included a 150-foot cannon with two thumbs and a red fist on top. Johnny Depp paid for the whole funeral that saw Thompson’s remains blasted by the cannon with some fireworks on the side.
Once Upon A Time in Mexico is one of his favorites
Johnny Depp enjoyed working on Once Upon A Time in Mexico so much, and the movie is one of the star’s favorite projects. Shooting the film didn’t take so much time from Depp’s schedule as all his initial scenes were shot in only nine days, but those nine days weren’t even enough for Depp who wanted more.

Depp didn’t want to leave the movie set once his part was done so he asked to play another part, mostly because he loved portraying his character so much. In an interview, Johnny had this to say about his Agent Sands character, "The idea behind him is there was this guy I used to know in Hollywood, in the business, who on the outside was very charming – soft-spoken and almost hypnotic in the rhythm he used to speak."
The Viper Room
The Viper Room is a West Hollywood, California nightclub that was opened in 1993, and is partly owned by Johnny Depp. The other owner of the club is Sal Jenco, who played the character of Johnny on 21 Jump Street.

The Viper Room used to be an elite hangout club back in the day but sadly it also has a dark history as River Phoenix died of a drug overdose at the club the year it was opened. There’s a multi-genre music vibe at the club that goes from alternative rock to punk rock.
He was given a Hollywood Walk of Fame Star in 1999
When Johnny Depp was given his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star at 7020 Hollywood Blvd in November 1999, there was no doubt that he had earned it. Depp was honored with the 2,149th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

His star had three words scrawled with a black marker when it was unveiled in 1999 but it has since been vandalized since he and Amber Heard got into their messy divorce. Someone has however inscribed curse words between Johnny Depp’s name on his star, and the gold film emblem.
The horse adoption
Johnny Depp couldn’t help showing his soft side to the world when he adopted Goldeneye, the horse that portrayed Ichabod Crane’s horse, Gunpowder, in the 1999 film Sleepy Hollow. Depp adopted the horse because he learned the horse was going to be slaughtered and he didn’t want that to happen.

Sleepy Hollow wasn’t the most successful Johnny Depp movie but he won’t be forgetting that project anytime soon thanks to Goldeneye. Before their union got messy, Depp bought Amber Heard a horse so she could join him on the trails.
He met Vanessa Paradis while shooting The Ninth Gate
Johnny Depp has been engaged a couple of times but his longest relationship was with his ex-girlfriend, Vanessa Paradis, who is also the mother of his kids, Lily and Jack. Depp met Paradis while shooting The Ninth Gate in France.

They had met once before then but didn’t exactly connect then so when they met again at the shooting of the movie in Paris, Depp was instantly attracted to her so he nearly got hooked on the spot when she said hello to him.
Depp avoids seeing his own movies
It’s not unusual or unheard of for actors to avoid seeing their own movies because some get overly critical of their performances while others simply don’t want to watch themselves. In Johnny Depp’s case, he avoids watching his own movies because he thinks he should leave his character alone when he’s not playing it.

It didn’t help that Depp felt sick after seeing himself in A Nightmare on Elm Street; Johnny Depp simply doesn’t like the idea of so many people watching him die. This also helps Depp reset after being in character for so long, other people in Hollywood can maybe learn a thing or two about this.
His first wife was a make-up artist
Johnny Depp’s first wife was Lori Anne Allison, a make-up artist that Johnny met in Los Angeles in 1983. Depp was still doing some music then, and was a member of a band; he was performing with his band in opening acts so he still hadn't booked anything major at this time.

He and Lori got married the same year they met but their union was short-lived. Depp was a struggling rockstar at the time so money was tight, and in the end, the money problems they had ended in their divorce, I bet she wishes she held on just a bit longer because now, money wouldn't be an issue.
The tattooed man
There’s no doubt that Johnny Depp is a fan of tattoos; he has tattoos for his mother, Betty Sue, and some for his children too. If that's not enough, he has a tattoo of the number three in between his index finger and thumb.

Depp has had tattoos ever since he was young and the trend has continued into his adulthood, he has even gotten some tattoos to represent some of his favorite characters that he has played. In total Depp has 37 tattoos, each with its own special meaning.
He spent most of his childhood in Florida
Johnny Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky but he ended up spending most of his childhood in Miramar, Florida. Depp’s father abandoned the family when Johnny was only a little boy; his departure prompted his mother to migrate as a result of her Cherokee ancestry as her father was a full Cherokee.

Because of this Cherokee link, the family moved to Miramar, Florida, and were there for a while before they moved once again, this time to California on the West Coast. The good news is that once he arrived in California he was able to stay put and lives there to this day, in the Hollywood Hills.
He got a belly dancer for his 22nd birthday
You can only get certain intriguing details about celebrities when you watch their interviews; Johnny Depp described the events of his 22nd birthday vividly for us fans during an interview. For Depp’s 22nd birthday, he got a belly dancer from his sister who danced for him while everybody else looked on.

Johnny Depp wasn’t particularly thrilled by the dance as he had an awkward look on his face while it lasted. When the dance was over, Depp was made to dress up like a man version of his sister and dance with her.
He composed his character’s theme song in Once Upon a Time in Mexico
More on Johnny Depp’s music-savvy, Once Upon a Time in Mexico thrilled Johnny Depp in many ways, and it was also the first film in which he got to compose his character’s theme song.

Depp had done something similar by singing in Sweeney Todd and playing the guitar in Chocolat but none of those were like Once Upon a Time in Mexico for which he composed Sands' theme song and starred alongside Salma Hayek, Willem Dafoe, Antonio Banderas, and more.
Blame it on an armadillo
Johnny Depp’s hotel room was found to be in a complete mess in 1994, prompting hotel staff to call him and inquire what happened in there. Depp had lodged in a $2,200 Presidential suite and spent the night there with no drama but when he checked out, a staggering mess was found in his suite.

The actor apparently blamed the mess on an armadillo; a police officer investigating the crime described the actor coming home and opening the closet door to find an armadillo who ran around knocking things over and leaving the room in a mess. You can't make this stuff up.
He turned down Thelma and Louise
Johnny Depp was offered the chance to feature in the 1991 movie, Thelma and Louise but he turned it down because he was used to playing complex characters with unusual personalities and he thought the JD character he would have played in the movie was too regular and normal for him.

Depp would have played a character named JD had he accepted the offer; the movie itself is about Thelma and Louise and their encounters as they abandoned their regular lives to go to Mexico. You can tell that Depp isn't into acting just for the money, but instead for the challenge. Instead, the role ended up going to Brad Pitt, who ended up doing a phenomenal job in the movie.
He learned to speak French
Johnny Depp’s ability to speak French is a case of cultural assimilation; the movie star picked up the language from living in Paris with Vanessa Paradis, his French ex-girlfriend, and their children. He must have picked up loads of French words from Paradis, and his cameo roles in French movies couldn’t have hurt either.

He has even been tested in interviews where Depp has been asked to speak French. Johnny Depp is of English, French, German, Irish, and West African ancestry and his surname comes from a French immigrant, Pierre Dieppe.
He is a fan of The Fast Show
While Johnny Depp doesn’t fancy watching himself on the big screen, he doesn’t mind watching others do their thing when he has some free time. Depp is particularly fond of the British comedy show, The Fast Show, a sketch show that depicts a British society in the mid-1990s.

It’s easy to see how Depp became hooked on the show as it is a superb show in which Paul Whitehouse and other actors turn up to portray various characters. Johnny Depp even has a cameo appearance in the "Suits you sir" sketch of the show’s last episode.
He based Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards
Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow character in Pirates of the Caribbean is quite easily the star actor’s most famous character but a lot of people don’t know that he based the character on a rock star. It may not be as obvious at first but keep reading and go back to look at the character and we bet you'll see it.

After the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of The Black Pearl, Depp stated during interviews that he found inspiration for his Jack Sparrow character from Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones’ legendary guitarist. Keith Richards inspired many aspects of the character, from the look to the intelligence.
Depp won a Golden Globe in 2008
Johnny Depp has never won an Oscar but he did manage to win a Golden Globe award in 2008. Depp won the Golden Globe award for his portrayal of the Sweeney Todd character; Todd is an 1800s English character that was created from superstition.

The Sweeney Todd accounts vary but what they have in common is they are united in labeling Todd a murderer that posed as a barber and would slice victims’ throats before dumping them down a basement. Johnny Depp plays complex, unusual roles like this with ease.
He was arrested for assaulting the paparazzi in 1999
Johnny Depp isn’t a stranger to arrests and police stations. He was in London in 1999 one morning; he had just left the Mirabelle restaurant there early in the morning when he got into it with a paparazzo that tried to take his picture.

Depp eventually got arrested for assaulting the paparazzo; the police said they tried to caution Depp after he threatened to assault the man with a plank. Coincidentally, Depp was in London to film Sleepy Hollow at the time.
