College tuition is very expensive. If you don’t have the money to pay your tuition, you may qualify for financial aid. Whether or not your would quality depends on your income and your parent’s income. If you do qualify, your tuition would be covered. There are certain items that are not covered by your financial aid, therefore, you would need to pay for these expenses out of your own pocket.

School Supplies

Your financial aid will not pay for the school supplies that you will need to stay organized in college. You will need a folder for each class so that you can keep your work organized. You will also need pens, pencils, highlighters, index cards, and notebooks. All of these items would need to be purchased by you. These supplies aren’t too expensive, therefore, you should be able to afford everything that you need.

Textbooks

It is important to understand that the money for your textbooks won’t automatically come out of your financial aid. You might have some money left over after your tuition has been paid and you can use that for your textbooks. If there isn’t enough money leftover to purchase all of your books, you will need to pay for them yourself. Textbooks can be expensive, therefore, if you cannot afford to buy them brand new, you can save a great deal of money if you purchase your books used.

Summer Classes

If you are planning to take summer classes because you failed a course or because you want to improve your education, chances are you will need to pay for the classes out of your own pocket. Most financial aid programs pay for the 12 semesters that you would be in school for during your four years of college. Any additional classes that you choose to take would not be paid for by your financial aid.

The Entire Cost of Your Rent

If you are planning to live on campus, chances are that your financial aid will cover the cost of your housing. If you are planning on living off campus, your financial aid may cover a portion of your rent but not all of it. It is a good idea to find out exactly how much the financial aid will cover. If you don’t think that you can afford it, you should reconsider your decision to live off campus.

Your Laptop

When you are a college student today, you are going to need a computer. Not only will it be helpful in taking notes quickly, it will also be very important when you are writing papers and when you need to do research. Laptops can be expensive, and unfortunately, they are not covered by your financial aid. If you have any money left over after your tuition, housing, and textbooks are paid for, you can use what is leftover for your laptop. If you have nothing leftover, you would need to buy the computer yourself. Depending on the school that you are attending, you might be able to rent a laptop which is easier than coming up with hundreds of dollar to purchase a laptop outright.

College is very expensive. Even if you qualify for financial aid, there are certain things that are not covered.
