Why Not Following Advice Can Be A Good Idea

Everyone loves to give advice. A small percentage of those people, however, love to receive advice. It’s like we all consider ourselves experts on everything while everyone else is completely clueless. With that in mind, you might still feel a little guilty anytime someone offers you advice about something and you choose to ignore that advice. Rest assured; you do not always have to follow the advice you are offered. Even if it is from people who you think might actually know what they’re talking about. Here are three examples of why you shouldn’t always follow seemingly good advice when it comes to making life decisions about your career.

Do What You Love

Okay, yes, you should do what you love. There’s no reason you should be stuck in a dead-end job doing something you hate for the rest of your life. However, you cannot always do what you love. If you love getting busy in the bedroom more than anything in the world, you’re supposed to give up your job and make that a career choice? Last time I checked that kind of career choice came with some less than desirable benefits – such as herpes, divorce and jail time. You can’t always do what you love, but you can do something you enjoy, like teach or write.

Sometimes It Is About Money

People will tell you that you shouldn’t make career decisions based on monetary factors. However, if you want to keep your house and fill up your gas tank and put food on your table, you may make decisions based on money. Quitting your job to do what you love may seem liberating, but if it isn’t going to ensure you can eat or live, it’s not always a good idea.

It’s Distracting

You might listen to experts tell you to do what you love. Do what you are passionate about. Turn your passion into your lifestyle. However, if you spend your time trying to figure out exactly what it is you are passionate about, you might forget to live in the moment. If you don’t know what you’re passionate about, don’t force it. Try new things. Live in the moment. Don’t look for passion; let it find you.
