Be The Type Of Houseguest Your Host Will Hate To See Go

Being a houseguest can feel awkward, just as it can feel a bit awkward to be a host, as well.  But there are things that you can do as a houseguest to make your host sad to see you go.

If you are a houseguest, you should first and foremost be grateful for the hospitality you are receiving.  Be sure to express your gratitude verbally and be gracious about receiving whatever accommodations that are given to you.  Don’t be a complaining houseguest even if you find the sheets to be hot or the pillows to be lumpy.  The only time you should say anything is if there is something that affects your health such as an allergy to the soap in the bathroom.

Be sure to be respectful to your host.  If you know she is early to bed and early to rise, be careful not to make noise if you are coming in late.  Don’t take the last cup of coffee or use things that aren’t specifically in the guest room for you without being invited to do so.

Do your part while you are staying with your host.  Offer to help with dishes and be sure to do your own laundry.  A houseguest that is thoughtful and does their part is one that a host is sad to see go.

Finally, it is always nice to show gratitude after you return to your own home.  Even though you have undoubtedly expressed your thanks verbally, it is nice to make a gesture such as sending flowers, a thank you card or something similar to show how much you appreciated the hospitality you were shown.  It is also nice to let your host know that should they ever be in your area, you would love the chance to have them as your houseguest in return.
