Three Easy Ways to Relax

If you’re anything like me, you aren’t relaxing even when you are relaxing. I have an 18-month-old daughter and a four-year-old daughter. Even with my oldest in Pre-K now and only one child to care for half the day, I still don’t have any free time. While traveling with my family last week, I wasn’t even able to lie by the pool because I was too busy chasing one child while my husband chased the other. Did we sit? No. The point is, we are all busy, even when we’re relaxing. Since there’s no such thing as relaxation in a parent’s life (or anyone else’s) I have to make my own time to relax, and I’m sharing my secrets with you.

Yoga

I don’t have time to take a class or even get a full workout in at once, but I do have time to do at least 5-15 minutes of yoga each day while my youngest naps. What makes it easy is that my oldest likes to practice yoga with me. She thinks it’s cool to be very quiet and do fun exercises (or mousker-sizes as she calls them – thank you Disney Channel!). Just a few minutes of yoga to relax my body, clear my mind, and get me moving is enough to calm me down when the stress of the day is getting to me.

Make a List

Let’s face it; sometimes we wonder what on earth we were thinking doing this, that, or the other. When I feel extra stressed and unable to focus because of it, I channel my energy into making a list of things I’m grateful for. This list helps remind me that even though I don’t have enough time to make it all the way through my to-do list that day, I don’t have anything to complain about. It’s surprising how helpful and calming it is to put things on paper, and into perspective.

Color

This may sound silly to some, but coloring is one of my favorite ways to relax. Not only do I get to do something fun with my daughters, I get to focus on creating something pretty and fun. It reminds me of my childhood, and I feel instantly relaxed and more like a good mom.
