There are at least 20 things that are easy to give up during a financial crisis. When money’s tight you need to prioritize.

Fast Food

Given the increase in the cost of fast food, it’s fair to state that you should be able to let go of this anyway. But in a financial crisis, this should be one of the first things to go, unless the dollar menus come back.

Brand Name Products

Unfortunately, too many people are willing to pay for a brand instead of quality. In many cases, the brand name products are just the same as the generic.

Expensive Vacations

If you’re having trouble paying the bills then you don’t need to go on a fancy vacation. It’s time to enjoy the comforts of home in a different way.

Video Games

These are hi-tech toys in a lot of ways, and not necessary to life, no matter what gamers say. It’s nice to have them around, but they’re not vital to survival.

This could be anything from a high-priced action figure to an ATV or something equally as expensive. These things aren’t necessary when you need to feed your family, or yourself.

Lavish Homes

Having a big home is great, but one has to be able to afford it as well. If you can’t do that, then it’s time to downgrade.

New Cars

Used cars aren’t that big of a deal so long as they run. If you judge your worth by the look of your car then you’ve got bigger problems.

Specialized Services

Getting your lawn mowed, house cleaned, etc., are services that many people can do, but are too lazy or too busy to accomplish. It’s time to prioritize your time though if you can’t afford these services.

Expensive Phones

There are still such things as phones that work on a pay-as-you-need basis. Just because you can’t afford an overpriced iPhone doesn’t mean much.

Gym Membership

You can work out at home, even if it doesn’t offer the same variety of workouts. Build a home gym, it’s not that much if you figure out what you need.

Brand New Computer

I’m with a lot of people, I enjoy purchasing new electronics since no one has been on them. But in a pinch, a refurbished or rebuilt laptop or PC will work.

Jewelry

Can you eat precious stones? The money you can get for them is far more useful than the stones themselves. I get it, some pieces are handed down throughout generations. But survival is more important sometimes.

New Furniture

Craigslist is still worth it when looking for free items, or stuff that’s priced low enough and is still functional. Don’t turn your nose up at something that can work if it’s cleaned up and covered with blankets.

Kitchen Gadgets

Most of the gadgets that you use in the kitchen are kind of useless anyway. Put in a little elbow grease when making a meal and forego wasting money on various tools.

Movie Theater

This is something that’s a luxury anyway and shouldn’t be taken as a necessity. It’s a lot more special to visit a theater now and then.

Streaming Services

At one point, when the streaming services we use now were still cheap, they were worth it. But as the prices continue to climb it’s easier to choose as to which ones to keep and which ones to ditch.

Pedicure/Manicure

It’s true, some people actually need this since they can’t do their own nails. But maybe it’s time to rely on family to help out or learn how to do it on your own.

Hair Salons/Barber

The kind of money that goes into the salon or barber is insane these days since a haircut can cost more than a trip to the grocery store. Either research stylists and barbers in the area who work for a cheaper rate, or find another solution.

Holidays

Money is tight for a lot of people around the holidays, but family usually understands if they know what’s going on. The main point here is to make do with what you have and enjoy what you can.

Alcohol

Again, this should be easy to forego when it comes to a financial crisis. If it’s not a simple matter of not buying a bottle, then you might need a bit of help.
