Little Ways to Stay Close

Life, kids, work, school, finances, social life, and different family dynamics have a way of making it difficult for families to stay close. Some couples can’t handle this kind of pressure and the wedge it puts in between their marriages, and their marriages fail. Other couples make it a point to stay close without any problems at all. If you want to make sure that life does not get in the way of your marriage, you need to know the surprising ways that many couples stay close.

Love from the Beginning

One of the easiest ways to remember why you fell in love with a person in the first place is to frame a photo of the two of you from your early dating days when you were head over heels for one another. Place this photo somewhere prominent in your household to remind you of what a great foundation you built your relationship on.

A Dream

Think ahead to the days when your kids are grown and out of the house. Make a plan and give yourselves something to look forward to when the kids are grown. You’ll miss them terribly – and don’t forget to enjoy this time with them when they are young – and you need something to look forward to once your parenting days are “done”, at least in the traditional sense. When the kids are being bad or you’re feeling sad about the fact that you never get any time alone because of soccer practice, PTA meetings, student award ceremonies, Girl Scouts, cheerleading practice, football games, and the social lives of the little people, you need something to look forward to. Make a plan. Talk about the days when your kids are out of the house and you can travel all you want, stay up late, sleep in late, and have naked Tuesdays every week. Having something to look forward to together is a great way to stay close.

A Special Anniversary

Of course you should celebrate your wedding anniversary, but don’t let that be the only one. Pick a special anniversary to celebrate quietly and in private every year. Maybe it’s the day you saw the very first positive on your pregnancy test, the first time you kissed, the day he proposed, or anything else. It’s your special day, so make it special. For us, we celebrate the day we met every year. The first time we met was the day our lives changed forever because we were inseparable after that.
