Amazingly, the 15 highest-grossing movies based on video games have done quite well over the years despite their humble beginnings. Early on that wasn’t the same story, but thankfully, the genre has gained traction.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie-$1.36B

There are all sorts of things that one can say about this movie ranging from the use of Chris Pratt as the main character to the Easter eggs that are found throughout the movie. But in a lot of ways this was a lot of fun for those of us who grew up with this game.
Pokemon: Detective Pikachu-$450M

Let’s be honest here, there are only a few games that can possibly match the notoriety of Pokemon. But despite all that, it does sound as though the fan reaction died down a lot quicker with this movie.
Warcraft-$439M

Surprisingly, this movie did this well since the general consensus among fans and non-fans is that it wasn’t that great. But then again, the love people had for the game built a great deal of curiosity.
Rampage-$428M

It’s funny to realize how many people remember this game from back in the day. But when Dwayne Johnson is in a movie it’s fair to assume that no one is going to care.
Uncharted-$407.1M

The response to this movie was kind of odd since so many people were excited to hear that it was being made. Still, it was entertaining enough to sit and watch.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2-$405.4M

The arrival of Knuckles and the return of Dr. Robotnik made a big splash in this movie. Strangely, the inclusion of Tails didn’t do much apart from adding a cute factor.
The Angry Birds Movie-$352.3M

Plenty of people have played this game on their phones or tablets once or twice and come to find where the ‘angry’ part comes from. But the movie was interesting and veered away from the actual gameplay just enough to be amusing.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time-$336.3M

It’s tough to state that anyone cared much about this game by the time it came out. Some diehard fans might still like to comment, but overall it’s a forgettable title.
Sonic the Hedgehog-$320.9M

There’s an issue with making video games into movies, and a lot of it has to do with fans who are adamant about the movie remaining true to the source. That’s not always bound to happen.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter-$312.2M

Since the emergence of Resident Evil on the big screen, fans had plenty to say. The only problem is that not everything they had to say was positive.
Resident Evil: Afterlife-$300.2M

Seeing this title on the list twice makes it clear that enough fans enjoyed the experience, while non-fans simply enjoyed the zombie aspect. It is a fun story, but it derailed not long after its emergence.
Five Nights At Freddy’s-$297.1M

The story is insanely creepy, enough so that people are still talking about it. But at the same time, possessed animatronics kind of drop quickly down the charts once their movies and games are released.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider-$274.7M

Fans were divided over who played the main character better, Angelina Jolie or Alicia Vikander. The update kind of helped this movie, but not much.
Tomb Raider-$274.6M

At the time this movie came out, Lara was only a video game character and not much else. But when she was put on the big screen people went nuts, especially since Angelina Jolie appeared to exemplify the main character.
Assassin’s Creed-$240.5

This movie received a great deal of hate even though the video games have been well-liked for many years. It does have something to do with the fact that a lot of people wanted to see various other characters portrayed.
