Divorce is Not an Option

There is so much advice when it comes to marriages, divorce and how to avoid the latter. There’s no right or wrong way to be married (though abuse is always, always wrong). What works for one couple might not work for the other and sometimes you just look at other couples and wonder how on earth their marriage works for them, but it just does. While there isn’t any right or wrong advice when it comes to marriage and preventing divorce, there are concepts that work for most couples when it comes to keeping your marriage intact.

Couples Who Play Together Stay Together

It really comes down to this; if you aren’t having fun as a couple, one or both of you will start having fun somewhere else. When one of you starts having fun elsewhere, it’s never good for your marriage. As a couple you should have interests. You should have your own interests and you should have shared interests; and you should always make time to enjoy your shared interests.

Vent Carefully

Sure, your boss is a jerk and his coworker is a raging hormonal pain in the behind, and boy do you both look forward to coming home and venting about the complete idiots you are forced to deal with on a daily basis. It’s great that you have someone who’s willing to listen to you unload, but it can become a problem in your marriage if all you do is vent and complain to one another. For example, if you are always venting to him that you can’t get a break and that things never go your way, he might begin to feel more like your caregiver than your husband, and that’s not good for your marriage. Feel free to vent, but make it a rule that you can only vent about the same thing so much before you just have to make a change to prevent divorce from becoming an option.

Be Intimate

You’re busy, your kids are annoying, you are sleep deprived, you are stressed. You may be a lot of things, but one thing is certain; if you aren’t intimate, your marriage is in trouble. Make time for intimacy, no matter what else is going on in your life. Make it a priority at all times.
