Tips for Working From Home With Children

Working from home is a great gig, if you can get it. It’s perfect for those who want to spend more time with their kids, traveling, or doing what they want to do. However, it takes discipline. You cannot say you will work from home if you won’t. You can’t get things done if you don’t have discipline. Finding the discipline and the time to work from home with children in the house is especially hard, trust me, but it can be done. These three tips will make it easy for you to manage working and children in the same environment.

Wake Up Early

Working from home is something you have to wake up early for when you have kids. The time in which they are asleep is the most productive time for you to work. Without interruptions, you can get far more accomplished. Try getting up an hour or two before the kids and using that time to knock out a few deadlines.

Use Naps Wisely

I know how tempting it can be to put the kids down for an afternoon nap and decide it’s the perfect time to head outside to lie by the pool with that new book you downloaded, but you just can’t do that every day. Unless you plan on staying up all night long or ignoring your kids when they are awake, you have to do something else; like work while they nap. You’ll be thankful that you took advantage of this time when they wake up and want you to play.

Be Flexible

Kids are unpredictable. If you want to work from home, you have to understand that you might not have the same day every day. One day you might be able to work without interruption while they watch a great movie. The next day, they might not nap and they might be fussy and at the end of the day you’ll have accomplished nothing. Be prepared. Expecting the unexpected is a great virtue when you work from home.
