15 Phrases That Annoy Millennials

Life happens. Life transforms with every generation. Every generation will have a different perspective on life, and it is never good to compare. It is important to be mindful of how certain words might come across and sound disrespectful to others. In this article, we will talk about millennials and here are 15 phrases that annoy them.

“When I was your age…”

This classic line typically means, “Our life was harder but also better back then”. Starting a phrase like this always makes you feel that you are underestimated and your achievements mean nothing. Naturally, it makes millennials think, “Here goes another comparison”. Of course, the experience we gained in the past is important, but some people feel it is more like a rejection of what they have.

“You millennials are so entitled.”

Oh, this one hurts a bit. Making a stereotypical remark about an entire generation is not a good outlook. Millennials certainly have their idiosyncrasies, but entitlement is a harsh label. Typically tossed around in conversations about office culture or personal choices, this sentence can derail meaningful conversation faster than you can say “avocado toast.”

“Just put in your dues.”

You often hear this in professional contexts. In other words, you must tolerate poor working conditions, crappy pay, and a bad boss now because it pays off later. We agree the road to success is paved with grit, but it is also extremely frustrating when it sounds like a free pass to be treated badly.

“Is that a real job?”

This question is rather hurtful, especially for a social media career, freelancing, or any job that does not fit the traditional definition. Millennials are taking jobs that might not have even existed even a decade ago. And that confuses some people and only reflects the lack of information and disrespect.

“You should buy a house.”

Purchasing a property is a good and solid achievement for anyone in adulthood. But the economic situation has transformed over the years. Many millennials have to deal with the constant struggles of our current economic system and just cannot afford a home. Debt has become expensive.

“Why don’t you call instead of texting?”

In this day and age, text messages and emails are more than an acceptable form of communication, sometimes even better. When people try to push the call to make it the ‘right’ way to communicate, it comes across to other people as “you are out of date” or “I love to hear myself speak.” The truth is texting gives everyone the chance to read and edit their words.

“You guys have it so easy with all this technology.”

This phrase is true to some extent, and we accept that. It is true that technology has simplified the life around us. But what about the information overload, the anxiety surrounding constant availability and presence on social media. Yes, it is amazing, but it is not at all easy.

“Social media isn’t a real way to connect with people.”

This is a tricky one. For millennials, social media is not just about scrolling through pics and memes. It is a real way of staying updated, keeping in touch with friends, and networking with people. Disregarding this so easily takes away from its delicate, intrinsic value and importance today.

“What do you mean you don’t want kids?”

This question is outright offensive and intrusive, too. Family planning is extremely personal, and the times have also changed. Many millennials prefer to focus on their career, travel, or personal development before, or instead of, starting a family. Also, with our economic realities, the decision is more complex than ever.

“Must be nice to travel so much instead of working a real job.”

Traveling is considered a way to avoid reality and a privilege for those who cannot be bothered to commit to a 9-to-5 job. But, for many millennials, traveling is essential to maintaining a good work-life balance or even a job choice sometimes. This phrase undermines the effort some people put into planning and saving for a trip and the benefits of cultural exposure and global awareness.

“When are you going to get a real career?”

This phrase can feel like a real gut punch. In today’s gig economy, many millennials juggle multiple part-time jobs or freelance jobs instead of full-time traditional jobs. The reality of how careers work today is entirely different than it was decades or even years ago. The flexibility and diversity of jobs today are dictated more by personal and economic realities.

“Can’t you do it without needing a safe space?”

This can often be overheard in conversations surrounding mental health or inclusivity. A safe place is not a way to coddle everyone but merely about creating a respectful environment. We should be able to do things without fearing mockery and judgment. A safe space is someplace all generations could learn to benefit from.

“You wouldn’t understand; it’s a generational thing.”

Again, while it is true in some cases, such a statement can feel alienating and dismissive of the perspective or insights of a younger person. It tends to silence conversation and reinforces a divide that does not need to exist in the first place. Every person is unique, and that is not only because of age.

“You should spend less time on your phone.”

Although it is crucial to get away sometimes, this phrase does not consider that for most millennials, phones are their lifeline. Not only that, but people need phones for work, health, and staying informed. The judgment on screen time glosses over the real-world practicalities of living in the digital era.

“Back in my day, we respected our elders.”

Getty Images

Respect is critical, of course. But this phrase implies that respect is always due and should be granted at any cost without understanding or mutual respect. Many millennials do not see this phrase as a plea for regard. Instead, it sounds more like a command for respect, regardless of the situation.
