We are an imaginative lot where conspiracy theories reign supreme among a globally connected mind space. More or less ridiculous, they spark interest, disbelief, and sometimes belief as well. Below are 20 crazy conspiracy theories that have attracted the minds and hearts of people across the world.

Moon Landing Was Staged

Some people really believe that humans never landed on the moon. They argue that the U.S. government staged the whole Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969 to win the space race against the Soviet Union. Supporters of this theory point to oddities in the photos and videos, like the unfurled American flag and the absence of stars.

Earth is Flat

Yes, even in the 21st century, the Flat Earth Society is alive and well. Members of this group insist that the Earth is flat, dismissing centuries of science and direct images from space. They claim all evidence is part of a massive cover-up. They often argue that if you travel to the edge, you will see an immense ice wall (Antarctica).

Chemtrails

Look up in the sky and see those streaks of white. Some say they are just water vapor, normal contrails from airplanes. But according to the chemtrail conspiracy theory, those streaks contain chemicals dumped by the government for sinister purposes, like controlling the weather or your mind.

The Illuminati, a group from the 18th century, is believed by some to control the world through various puppet leaders and secretive families (think Rothschilds and Rockefellers). Believers think that the Illuminati is plotting to gain global domination. They interpret symbols on currencies and iconic landmarks as signs of influence, weaving a narrative of power and control.

Reptilian Overlords

Few people believe that shape-shifting reptilian aliens control Earth by taking on human form and gaining political power to manipulate our societies. David Icke, a former footballer and sports broadcaster, popularized this theory. According to him, many world leaders and influential figures are actually reptilians with bad intentions for the human race.

JFK Assassination

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 spawned countless conspiracy theories. According to an official, Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. But many believe there was a broader conspiracy involving the CIA, mafias, or even the Vice President at the time, Lyndon B. Johnson. Theories suggest multiple shooters and complex plots, inconsistencies in witness testimonies, and mysterious deaths of key figures.

Area 51

Area 51, a highly secretive U.S. Air Force base in Nevada, is a hotbed for alien-related conspiracy theories. Some believers claim that the government uses this site to store and examine aliens and crashed spacecraft. The conspiracy peaked with reports of UFO sightings and the infamous 1989 claim by Bob Lazar, who said he worked on alien technology in Area 51.

Pharmaceutical Industries Suppresses Cures

This theory accuses big pharmaceutical companies of hiding cures for diseases like cancer and HIV to continue profiting from treatment drugs. Supporters argue that curing diseases is not as profitable as treatments that patients must use over a long time. Despite numerous debunkings and lack of evidence, this belief persists, fueled by distrust and the complex nature of medical research.

Death of Paul McCartney

Another pop culture conspiracy claims that Paul McCartney of the Beatles group died in a car crash in 1966 and was secretly replaced by a look-alike. Believers point to supposed clues, such as the “Paul is dead” messages heard when playing “Revolution 9” backward and the Abbey Road album cover, where Paul is barefoot and out of step, symbolizing a corpse.

HAARP Controls the Weather

The High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is an ionospheric research program funded by the U.S. government. Some believe it is capable of controlling the weather or triggering catastrophes like hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes. Scientists dismiss these claims, explaining that HAARP’s capabilities are simply too weak to influence weather, but the theory still prevails.

One of the most politically charged conspiracy theories alleges that the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, were actually orchestrated by the U.S. government to justify the subsequent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Supporters cite supposed abnormalities in the way the World Trade Center towers fell, suggesting that it was a controlled demolition planned by high-ranking U.S. officials.

Moon is a Hologram

Beyond just doubting the moon landing, some believe the moon itself might not be what it seems. This theory suggests that the moon is a hologram projected into the sky to hide something from the public or to manipulate us through artificial tides. Followers of this idea look for “glitches” in the night sky to prove the moon’s digital nature.

Titanic Never Sank

This theory suggests that the Titanic did not sink on its maiden voyage in 1912 but its sister ship, the Olympic, sank as part of an insurance scam. Supporters claim that the old, damaged Olympic was swapped with the Titanic so that the ship’s owner, White Star Line, could collect insurance money on a vessel that was already a financial liability.

Global Warming is a Hoax

Despite scientific evidence to the contrary, some groups claim that global warming is a hoax executed by scientists, governments, or environmental groups to push through regulations and taxes. They argue that climate change data is manipulated or entirely fabricated to suppress economic growth or to shift political power.

Denver International Airport is at the center of several conspiracy theories due to its unusual architecture and the odd artwork throughout its terminals. Some theorists suggest the airport is the headquarters for the Illuminati, with hidden bunkers under it. The apocalyptic paintings and strange sculptures, like the blue Mustang with glowing red eyes, only add to the theory.

Have you ever remembered something one way, but it turned out to be completely different? This is known as the Mandela Effect, named after Nelson Mandela. This theory suggests that these combined misremembering are evidence of parallel universes colliding. Believers often mention differences in movie quotes, logos, and historical events as proof that we are experiencing more than one reality.

The legend of Atlantis, a technologically advanced utopia that supposedly sank into the ocean, has been around since Plato. Some modern theorists suggest it was real and that remnants of its high-tech gear might even be found underwater. Others believe that survivors of Atlantis went on to influence other ancient civilizations, like the Egyptians and the Mayans.

Imagine a world where one of the most famous bands in history was fiction. That is right.
