It seems that this time of year there are people getting married every time we turn around. If you are currently one of them, or you have been in the past, you know that weddings are expensive. It’s almost impossible to fathom spending this much money on a party, but people do it all the time. How? How can people afford to get married with prices the way that they are, and without being personal millionaires or heiresses? They budget, save and they use tips and tricks that other people previously utilized to help save money at every turn. It’s been 11 years since I got married, but even I know a few tips and tricks for getting a deal on a wedding.
Pick an off day
We got married on a Sunday way back in 2005. We just let our friends and family know two years in advance so that they could all take the following Monday of work. We were engaged for two years while we planned our wedding and built our house, and we knew immediately we wanted to get married at a certain location and that we would have to do it on a Sunday to afford it. Believe it or not, it was less than half price to wait a day.
DIY
When I got married, there was no Pinterest and social media was pretty limited. Now you have everything you could ever want at your fingertips, and you can have the wedding of your dreams without spending a fortune since you can see how to DIY everything you ever wanted.
Say no to unwanted guests
The most difficult thing you can do during your wedding planning is create the guest list. It’s hard to decide who can come and who cannot, but you have to limit the number to accommodate your venue and to save money. Don’t feel bad not inviting coworkers if you’re not close. And certainly do not feel bad for not inviting people you don’t want there. For example, if your mother wants to invite her work friends and she’s not the one paying for them, tell her no. This is your day, after all.
