How To Cut Back On Your Halloween Spending

Halloween Spending

Kids love Halloween. It is the one time each year the kids can dress up as their favorite character or as something that they always wanted to be. It is also the only day of the year that it is appropriate for kids to go door to door asking strangers for candy. Many adults also love Halloween. It is a great excuse to dress up and have a party. The one problem with Halloween is that it is less than two months before the holiday season. Since most people are saving their money to buy holiday gifts, they don’t want to spend too much money on Halloween. There are a few ways that you can reduce your Halloween spending so that you still have enough money in your holiday shopping budget to buy all the gifts and decorations that are on your list.

Saving Money on Your Costume

Your costume is one of the most important parts of Halloween. Some people get so into Halloween that they spend a year creating the perfect costume. This can take a great deal of time and it can be very expensive. If you want to save money on your costume, there are a few things that you can do.

Pool Your Resources: If you have a group of friends who you are going to be with on Halloween, you should pool your resources. Have everyone bring the costumes or accessories that can be made into a costume. Chances are you can find some really good things when everyone comes together. Your friends may even have entire costumes that they wore a few years ago that you can make use of. Just because someone wore it a few years ago, it doesn’t mean that it won’t look great on you this year.

Go to the Thrift Store: The thrift store is a great place to find the perfect costume. If you have an idea in mind for the perfect costume, it won’t take long to find exactly what you are looking for at the thrift store. The best part is that you will end up paying much less money than if you were going to buy something from the costume store.

Saving Money on Your Decorations

If you are going to throw a good Halloween party, you are going to need decorations. If you are planning to go to your local party store, you can expect to spend a lot of money. Luckily, there are a few ways that you can save on your decorations.

  • Go to the Thrift Store: Thrift stores don’t sell just clothes. You should check out your local thrift store to see if there is anything that you can use for decorations.
  • Go to the Dollar Store: Chances are there is a dollar store in your area. This is a store where everything cost just $1. Most of these stores stock up on holiday decorations, making it easy to decorate the home on a very small budget.
  • Print Your Own Decorations: If you have a computer and a color printer, you can print out your own Halloween decorations. All you need to do is do an internet search for “free Halloween printables”, and see what you can find.

Saving Money on the Candy

Pre-packaged Halloween candy from the pharmacy or the supermarket can be expensive. You can try to find it on sale, however, it can still be costly. There are a couple ways that you can save a bit of money on candy whether you are going to pass it out to trick-or-treaters or if you want to put bowls of candy out at your party.

Check the Bulk Food Store: If you are going to need a large amount of candy for your party, you should check the bulk food store. You can get a lot of candy for much less than you would pay at your regular supermarket.

BYOC (Bring Your Own Candy): If you want to have a huge candy buffet at your party, ask each guest to bring a bag. This will give you the candy that you need and you will have a huge variety.

Saving Money on the Food

If you are going to have a successful party, you need to serve food. If you are planning to invite a lot of people, buying the food can be very expensive. The best way around this is to make it a potluck. This means that each guest would be required to bring a dish. You can ask them to bring whatever they would like or ask them to find a scary Halloween dish. If you are planning a potluck, you should have everyone let you know what they are bringing. You don’t want more than one person to bring the same dish. If you don’t want to do a potluck, you should consider making inexpensive dishes that will feed a lot of people, such as spaghetti and meatballs, chili, or a macaroni and cheese casserole.

Saving Money on the Drinks

Every great party needs drinks. Obviously, non-alcoholic drinks are cheaper than alcoholic drinks. If you are going to be serving an alcoholic Halloween drink, find something simple that doesn’t need too much hard liquor. You can offer one large dish of punch and let everyone know that the party will be BYOB (bring your own booze) once your guests have finished all of your punch. When everyone is bringing their own alcoholic beverages, it will save you a lot of money. When it comes to non-alcoholic beverages, you should look for sales at your local supermarket, buy cases of soda from the bulk food store, or check the dollar store for juices, water, and soda.

If you want to have a great time at your Halloween party but cannot afford to spend too much money, it doesn’t mean that your party can’t be great. There are plenty of ways that you can save money on both your costume and your party. This will ensure that you will still have all of the money that you need in your holiday shopping budget.
