What He is Thinking When You Tell Him You’re Pregnant

Whether you are planning to have a baby or something stops working and you find yourself with a little surprise on your hands (in your uterus…), you might wonder exactly what is going through his mind when you tell him he is going to be a daddy. When my husband and I woke up at 6 am five days before I was due to get my period (the EPT said I could take the test five days before, after all) because we were too excited to sleep, I wondered what was going through his mind.

I found out later that while we waited with nervous anticipation for the results, he was thinking how disappointed he’d be if it was negative, but that he was more concerned with how heartbroken I would be if it said negative. When the test said I was pregnant, he was thinking that this was the best thing that had ever happened to him. Here are a few other reactions men have when you tell them you’re expecting.

Excitement

Most men, especially those who are planning to start a family with their wives, are excited. They are proud of themselves for making this happen, excited to finally have a little boy or girl to call his own, and to have a little piece of the both of you to love forever.

Disbelief

Many men cannot believe that their lives just changed with a little urine and may not believe it. Some may not even believe it until the first sound of the baby’s heartbeat or the first picture on the sonogram machine.

Panic

Once the excitement wears off, he might feel a sense of panic. Suddenly his income doesn’t seem like enough, the house is too dangerous for kids, the car isn’t big enough, he doesn’t know anything about breathing and labor and Lamaze. It’s natural to fell panic, and he’s not alone.
