Three Little Things to Start Doing in Your Relationship

There are couples who are just so happy they make everyone sick. You might think those couples have been together for about five minutes because they haven’t had time to get sick of one another, but that’s not always true. My husband and I have been together for 11 years and we are happier now than we were when things were brand new and exciting. We’ve taken relationship advice from the best couples we know and we’ve created our own. Here are the things you should start doing in your relationship if you want to make it even better.

Show Kindness and Respect

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been together, you should always show kindness and respect to one another. This simple behavior can make or break your relationship. Being kind to your loved one for all that he or she does for you, even when it seems insignificant and showing respect for his or her feelings can make your relationship stronger and better than ever. I make the coffee each night before bed and set the timer so it’s brewing when we wake up. My husband once had my coffee cup, sugar, and cream sitting next to the coffee pot for me when I woke up and I thought it was the sweetest thing. His kindness made me feel like a queen, even though it wasn’t something monumental. To me, his kindness still means everything when I wake up every single morning to find that waiting for me.

Do Little Things Everyday

Birthdays, anniversaries, and other holidays are not the only times you should do something nice for one another. You should make a habit of doing little things for one another every single day. Slip a note in his wallet telling him to have a nice day, pick up a gift card for his favorite coffee shop for him, make his favorite cookies, or just greet him at the door with a passionate kiss and a big hug. Doing small things everyday is a reminder that each day is precious, and it reminds you everyday how much you love and are loved.

Ignore the Petty Stuff

So he left his dirty underwear on the bathroom floor again. You forget to shut the fridge every time you open it, and that annoys him as much as you with the underwear. I used to become so irritated when my husband placed all the pillows from our bed on the floor instead of on the settee because I am terrified snakes or bugs might get into our house when we open the garage and they’ll get into the pillows and be waiting for me in bed after we make it the next time (I know…I have issues). I don’t rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher and I put too many in every single time. We used to have long tiffs about these things – without ever getting anywhere – before realizing that some old habits die hard and we shouldn’t be irritated with each other for petty things. Unless, of course, a snake ends up in my bed.
