The workforce is fierce. You want to move up in your career, perhaps to a different company or to a higher position, but so does everyone else. For this reason, employers are looking at more than just your job performance when it comes to choosing who to hire and who to fire. They also look at these things when they are deciding who deserves a promotion more, and if you can’t pass these human resource tests, you won’t get the job. Here are a few job secrets you have to be aware of if you ever want to further your career.

Do Not Use Facebook

This isn’t to say you can’t use Facebook for personal reasons, but never, ever, ever talk about work, your job, your coworkers, or your boss on your Facebook page. Even if your page is private, these things have a way of coming back to haunt you. That friend of a friend you barely know might work for the competition and decide to get a job at your company, and print out those job complaints you posted to show to HR, and they might take your job.

Trick Questions

Prospective employers and your boss sometimes ask trick questions, and you have to be aware of them. If you are asked to explain a situation at work that didn’t go exactly as planned, use it as an opportunity to talk about how the project went wrong and what you learned from your mistakes. Explain how you now know not to do that again in the future. Employers are looking for people who are willing to admit when they’re wrong, but also use that experience as a learning tool.

Join the Team

You may not want to go to happy hour with your coworkers, or join the company softball team, but you should. Your boss is looking for a team player who wants to be involved in things outside of their actual duties. Everything you do – and don’t do – at work matters.
