Surviving A Move Miles Away From The Home You Know And Love

Any move is stressful but a long distance move is even more so.  You are leaving all that you know and love and facing very unfamiliar territory and that can make even the most outgoing person feel a little anxious.  There are things you can do to make the transition easier on yourself and your family.

Take care of all the business you can before the actual move.  Make sure all your utilities are ready to go.  This includes your satellite or cable.  Having some small comforts will help make you feel more at home.

Take a tour of the school your children will attend with them with you before the first day.  This helps to lessen their first day jitters and makes you feel more confident as well.

Be brave and branch out.  Find ways to meet new people and make new friends.  This will mean something different to everyone.  For some, it might mean that they join a gym, become a hospital volunteer or find a church to become involved in.  Joining the PTA or book clubs are also good ideas to try.  Whatever your normal outlet was before you moved, try to find a similar outlet in your new home.  Be confident when you do join something new and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and try to make new friends.

Don’t give up your connections to your past home, either.  Just because you have moved doesn’t mean those friendships end.  Make a special effort to keep in touch with family and friends.  There are many ways you can do this; email each other,  make frequent calls and even use regular mail to send letters and cards.

Remind yourself that all the newness will fade and you will soon feel at home in your new surroundings.  Everything will be just fine with your big move.
