Break The Worry Habit And Lessen Your Anxiety

From time to time, everyone suffers from anxiety.  However, there are those of us who seem to stay in a constant state of worry.  We are natural-born worry warts.  We worry about the important things in life and the not so important things in life.  If there is nothing to worry about, never fear; we worry warts will either come up with something to worry about or we will worry what we will next have to worry about next.  How do I know what someone who struggles with anxiety goes through?  I am a recovering worry wart.

I have learned, through my battles with anxiety that it doesn’t help.  Anxiety gets you nowhere fast.  Since I am also a proactive person, I have learned there are things you can do about your anxiety to help you deal with it and move on with your day.

Ask yourself if your worrying is helping anything?  Sometimes anxiety is a good thing, if it helps you to brainstorm and come up with a solution to a problem.  If this is the case, your anxiety is serving a purpose.   But most of the time, as we chronic suffers of anxiety know, it isn’t.

When that is the case, I remind myself that most of the things I worry about never come to pass.  Anxiety is, for the most part, a waste of time.  If that doesn’t help me shake the worry, I write out a list of possible outcomes to my possible problem and decide how I will deal with each one if they come to pass (which they probably will not, anyways).  This being done, I can usually move forward with my day.

Lastly, there is something to be said for distraction.  A good book or movie, an evening walk with a loved one or talking to a friend are all good distractions from your anxiety. Odds are, by the time whatever you have used for your distraction is over, you anxiety will be as well.
