Organizational Tips for Your Laundry Room and Mudroom

No matter how big our homes are we always manage to run out of space. If you feel like you have run out of space and need to get organized, you can get started with these organizational tips for your laundry room and mudroom.

Organizing Your Laundry Room

  1. Utilize the space between the washer and dryer for a narrow chrome shelving unit to house your detergents, a cup collector for “finds” in the dryer and a mesh bag for delicates.
  2. Install a hook on the wall to hold a dry-clean-only sac that is ready to take to the cleaners.
  3. Create a folding area above your washer and dryer by installing a table top mounted into the side walls.
  4. Keep your ironing board and iron on a wall mounted caddy when not in use.
  5. For laundry rooms with a closet close by, try stealing a little space to shelve laundry bins for your children. Colour-code or label each bin, encouraging them to deliver and pick up their laundry in this location.
  6. If you don’t have the floor space for a drying rack, try installing a rod, clothesline or save a little space in the closet for this purpose.
  7. Another alternative is to utilize the floor space in your closet and purchase a three-compartment hamper on wheels. This way when the loads go into the washer, they are already sorted.
  8. If you are lucky enough to have open wall space, install metal clips designed to hang brooms and mops.

Organizing Your Mudroom

Mudrooms can be a great place to keep your family’s “stuff” organized and accessible. But beware because it can also be a dumping ground for shoes, backpacks, toys and lost mail if these items do not have a permanent home.

Here are some ideas you can use to get your mudroom organized:

  • Add a wall shelf with hooks: a great home for keys, leashes, backpacks and, of course, coats.
  • Use storage benches: keep numerous remotes, magazines and video games within reach but out of sight.
  • Labeled baskets: gloves, hats, sunglasses and other items kept in bins with your name on it!
  • A combination chalk/peg/cork board: A place for friendly reminders keeps the communication among family members visual.
  • Lockers or built-in cubbies: built-in or purchased, these personalized areas keep each member of the family organized.
