I’m gonna do a Tough Mudder

Since my friend and I have been thinking about doing a Tough Mudder, I did some research. The course that will be in Seattle in September is 11 miles with 28 military-like obstacles. Not 11 miles of nice, pavement either, but uneven, un-dry, terrain! (hence, the mud). And obstacles like climbing a 3 story rope and falling off the other side into a pond. Or crawling through mud under electric wires, charged electric wires.

The Tough Mudder events were founded by Englishmen Will Dean and Guy Livingstone. While at Harvard Business School, Dean and Livingstone designed a course and used Facebook to invite friends to the first Tough Mudder in 2010 in Pennsylvania.

The difference between Tough Mudder and other obstacle races? One: this is not a race. You do not “win” by going fast. You win by helping your teammates  through every obstacle before going on to the next, and by finishing. Timing is not the issue. This course should take about 3 hours, but I will not guarantee that I make it in that fast. Two: mud. Lots of water and dirt and mud. (I will have to plan my wardrobe accordingly!)

Now I will learn the Tough Mudder Pledge:

As a Tough Mudder I pledge that…

*I understand that Tough Mudder is not a race but a challenge
*I put teamwork and camaraderie before my course time
*I do not whine- kids whine
*I help my fellow Mudders to complete the course
*I overcome all fears

I definitely have work to do, I will have to do some training, as will my teammates, all female by the way. If you would like to see the “boot camp for beginners” workout, go to my blog at
