Dealing with Mental Fatigue

Mental fatigue is a serious issue that many of us will face at some point in our lives. It is actually worse than dealing with physical fatigue. Mental fatigue reduces your ability to think clearly, make sound decisions, or express yourself well. If left untreated, mental fatigue can also cause physical fatigue and other illnesses, as well.

What causes mental fatigue? It is typically caused by too much stress at work, or at home. As well, it could be a result of dealing with the loss of a loved one, or dealing with severe financial difficulties, either in your business, or at home. For some it is due to a lack of quality sleep. The good news is that there are ways to combat mental fatigue. Here are a few suggestions.

Learn How to Relax your Body and Mind

  • Spend some time alone. Find a quiet space in your home where you can reflect on what has been going on and how it really makes you feel. Allow yourself to release any emotions that you have been suppressing. Cry if you feel like it. Start writing a journal based on your thoughts. Whatever you do, don’t spend this time making a list in your head of all the other things you need to do. Don’t rush through this time that you have for yourself. Just enjoy it!
  • Sleep well every night. Mental fatigue is very difficult to deal with if you feel tired and sluggish. Sleeping at least 9 to 10 hours a night allows your body time to heal and repair itself. Whenever possible, try to sleep in until 9 a.m. Most people don’t know this, but when our bodies are dealing with too much stress the best hours of sleep are between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. That is when your body does its best healing and rejuvenation.
  • Change your environment. Call some friends to meet for coffee.  Take the kids to the park for the day and play with them instead of just watching them. Spend the afternoon at a cafe reading a good book, or go window shopping at your favorite mall.
  • Go for a daily walk. Pick a time each day that you can go for a walk. Either first thing in the morning, or just before bed time. It doesn’t need to be a long walk. 30 minutes will do. You can walk alone or ask a neighbor to go along with you. Relax and enjoy being outdoors.
  • Do something just for you. Have you been dying to check out the new art gallery in your city? Now’s the time to go. And go by yourself, even if it is just for a few hours. Another idea is to book a day at a spa. Get a massage, manicure, and a facial.

Taking time out for yourself and focusing only on yourself is the best way to deal with mental fatigue. The important point though is that doing these things isn’t meant to be a one time thing. You need to slowly incorporate all of these suggestions into your daily routine until they become second nature to you. Then you will experience healthy changes in your life.
