The BRAT Diet For When The Kids Are Sick: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce And Toast

At this time of year, stomach bugs are as common as catching a cold is.  If your little one gets sick then the BRAT diet can help them to feel better quickly.

If your child and been vomiting or had diarrhea then the BRAT diet is just what they need.  First you should only allow clear liquids for 12 to 24 hours before beginning the BRAT diet.  Clear liquids are drinks like Sprite, Gatorade, chicken broth and drinks of that sort.

If your child has tolerate the clear liquids okay you can move them on to the BRAT diet.  The BRAT diet is pediatrician recommended and works very well at helping upset tummies get back in balance.  The BRAT diet has letters that stand for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.  There is a bit of variety within those food items that are mentioned.  For example, rice includes cooked rice but also Rice Chex and Rice cakes.  Toast includes crackers.

The BRAT diet is designed for children but is very effective in helping adults as well.  If you have been sick with a stomach illness then you should follow it as well.  You will  be surprised how well it works at setting your stomach back on track.

After the BRAT diet has been tolerated well for a time period of around 24 hours then you can advance on to a diet that is high in carbohydrates and low in fat.  The high carbohydrate low-fat diet includes foods like angel food cake, scrambled eggs, graham crackers, boiled chicken or grilled chicken.  It is really pretty self-explanatory.  From there then you gradually return to a normal diet.

Following these steps when recovering from a stomach illness will help you to recover faster and have less lingering symptoms along the way.  The BRAT diet is a big part of that recovery.
